Up to a certain age, parents are usually expected to have a pretty tight rein on the children's location and actions but after they reach an age of reasoning and responsibility, a certain latitude is lent the kids to go out of the house on their own for a period. Once that child's out of sight, the parent has no real or practical control, unable to see and hear what decisions the child makes...as a result, the decision to do something wrong would be more in the control of the child than the parent. Legislation's made it the parent's (or legal guardian's) responsibility to handle consequences (fines, signatures on official documents for placement, restitution, etc) that would be handed down to the person to which the minor's entrusted. Because of such legislation, that practice is expected to be followed. Practically speaking, the parent's between a rock and a hard place but I don't know of any reasonable alternative.

Back in the day when a single paycheck could support a family, yes. But these days, between economic stress preventing proper parenting and kids taking cues from each other rather than their parents, I'd say that's society's fault. I blame the Banksters!

Minors cannot, legally, be held accountable for their own actions but someone has to be responsible. It falls to the parents.

Soem times kids can have perfect upbringing and still end up junkies. I had a friend who was raised in a very sheltered home rich family lots of love fell in with the wrong crowd and is now a heroin dealer. Though with his good upbringing he is smart and has other people running his drugs so he doesn't get caught.

My teenage daughter's opinion is... It's not the parent's fault if the kid makes stupid decisions. The kid should know better.

SINCE I WAS AS YOUNG AS 7, MY MOM WAS PARALYZED & MY SISTER WAS 6. I

HAD TO COOK/WASH/CARE. BUT MY WEALTHY GRANDPARENTS PROVIDED FOOD.

That had to make for a tough childhood for you. Sometimes the older child has responsibility thrust on them long before they should have to be responsible.

I WAS FORCED INTO IT. BUT WHAT I HATED MOST WAS DEPENDING

ON MY GRANDS EVEN THOUGH I WAS 7. I WENT GLEANING FOR FOOD

IN THE WOODS TO AVOID TOTALLY DEPENDENT ON THEM. I MOSTLY

RAISED MYSELF, EVEN SCHOOLING, I TAUGHT MYSELF ENGLISH MOST

PART. AFTER HS, I WAS ENLISTED & IN THE JUNGLES, THERE WAS NO

SCHOOL. WHEN I TOOK A COLLEGE EXAM IN THE STATES I PASSED.

This is a hard one! Parents can't be everywhere! Schools need to be held accountable in some cases for not monitoring the behavior of the students more closley including a certain perimeter outside the school grounds. Know their friends!

If the kid is under 18 and living at home, the parents should have been more authoritative. However, if the kid no longer lives at home then he or she is responsible for his/her own actions.

The parents cant help it if the kids do drugs at an older age in the 14 and older ages if its younger than that than its both the parent and the childs fault...

If parents were held responsible for their children's' wrong doing, i.e., property damage, drug use and volience, there might be less of it. I know there are laws on the books in some states about this, but I don't think they are enforced enough.

Well, not Always... but it's usually the friends. And if you haven't taught your child to choose their friends carefully, it's your fault.

I think that is a cop-out. All the kids in a group reinforce each other's behavior. You can't say it's your child's friends' fault if your child does something wrong. What does that say about you AND your child?

I think parents should stop being legally responsible for their children at age 18. And most people think that this is how it is, when in reality, it's 21. I think that's a little ridiculous.

If a child sees a parent using drugs and they do them also, his or her will learn to do them. Which means do not ever let that happen and your kids will not be able to blame you for there problems.
