Should parents be allowed to select the gender of their offspring?

The advent of ultrasound scanners which allow the sex of an unborn
child to be determined in the womb, has more recently led to selective abortion, especially in China where cultural factors combined with the
single-child policy in the 1980s and 1990s to make many families
determined to ensure their only child was male. Although ultrasound
scanning for sexual selection is illegal, it is widespread in China.
Similarly, this occurs in India, with reports of widespread use of
ultrasound scanning and selective abortion of female fetuses.

Via ultrasound, the sex of a baby can usually not be determined until the
16th week of pregnancy. Obviously, the longer you wait, the more
difficult the procedure - and the more traumatic to the mother.

Some argue that people should have freedom of choice. Why shouldn’t would-be parents be
able to do this, given that no harm is done to others by their
decision?

Others argue that children are not toys. They are not meant to be designed to specifications most convenient to the ‘owner’.

Terminating a pregnancy for this reason, would certainly be related to one's religious beliefs.
Christians, for the most part, would strongly oppose abortion for this reason. I'm not sure
if there is an 'official' stance for those who are involved in Judaism, Pagans, Muslims, etc.. In Scientology, this would not be supported generally - although
ultimately the decision would be left up to the individua.

Do you think that parents should be allowed to select the gender of their offspring?

I'm kind of traditional when it comes to these things. I like the idea of being surprised. And I would be happy with either one.

It would cause higher risk of a gender imbalance, amongst other things.

It's unethical and wrong. That being said, abortion is a right. I believe it should be able to be used at any stage of pregnancy, for any reason.

It is sorta creepy but for those that have had the same sex 3 or more times in a row I can see it.
I thought you were talking about genetic manipulation which they can do now.
Aborting a baby for being the wrong sex is beyond creepy it is horrifyingly cold blooded.

    My Grandmother had 6 girls before having a boy and stopped there. ;}

To abort a baby for this reason is unconscionable.

You can't choose someone's gender though. You can choose their sex and even then I don't think it's a good idea.

I would rather have a boy than a girl. I'm a girl and it sucks:
Two or three days out of each month, I feel like i've gotten shot ten times. (menstrual cramps). Shaving is a pain in the ass and most men don't pluck eyebrows. I also boy clothes better than girls; they're made to last longer- in my opinion anyway.

    What's wrong with girls?
Take midol or another pain reliever
    Stop shaving
    Don't pluck your eyebrows
    Buy quality girl's clothing

    Problems fixed!

    No, doesn't work for me
you need to shave or get funny looks and plus, its more comfortable
    bushy brows are not attractive
too expensive. I, unlike some people, have a budget.
Male children are easier to take care of.

That's a lie, male children are not easier.

I like thick eyebrows. Buy your kids clothing from lands end clearance. It's affordable and it lasts for years. I hate to see young mothers putting down girls. You are a girl. Girls are not more difficult.

What if you have a daughter? You will be prejudiced against her by her gender before she's even born!

    I'm not having kids.
If I do, I'm adopting. There's no way i'm pushing anything out of me.

Parents should be allowed to make idiot mistakes. They will get to answer to their kids later......
