Should parents be allowed to have their baby's ears pierced?

Depending on the country, it may or may not be common to see piercings in a baby's ear. Should this be allowed or should this be made illegal for safety concerns?

If we are to legislate parenting, let's keep it to clearly abusive behavior. This action has ancient history without clearly negative effects.

I'm for it to as in I don't think we should make it illegal or against the rules to pierce a babies ear. But you miss my point on it being my daughters choice. Yes, it's quick no matter when you do it, but it should be her choice. I don't want her just to have it as a baby because I like it. What if she really doesn't? This just isn't that important and is up to her.

I think it should be up to the person to decide whether or not they actually *want* pierced ears. They should decide this when they are an adult (18 years of age), not have it decided for them when they are a baby or child when they have no say so in the matter.

So not only do you want it illegal to allow parents to have their children's ears pierced, you believe that anyone under age of 18 shouldn't be allowed to have it done? You'd be pissing off a lot of teens, that's for sure.

I don't think it should be illigal but i don't like the idea the baby doesn't even get a choice I feel like it's more for the parent then it is the baby.

I think it is pathetic and stupid, but as long as there aren't proven serious potential damages parents should be allowed to do whatever the hell they want with their children. Enough with the nanny state laws!

I have to say I'm a little conflicted on this one. I think ear piercing, while momentarily painful and also painful if infections develop, are relatively harmless. And should a child grow up and decide he/she doesn't want pierced ears, they can just remove the earrings and allow the skin to grow back over the holes. I would feel very differently about doing more permanent things, like tattoos.

On the other hand, my dad and I were passing a store in the mall a number of years ago where a mother was tightly holding her baby while a store employee pierced the baby's ears, and the shrieks from the little one really have stayed with me. I had to grab my dad and make him walk away as his inclination was to storm into the store and snatch the baby away from the women and call CPS.

I think it's actually easier to keep the ears cleaned and the earrings in when they're babies. Just my opinion.

At least discouraged. They shouldn't be pierced until the children can talk.

Why does the government feel the need to poke their nose into everyone's business? My ears were pierced when I was a few months old. That was my parents choice. I don't remember it hurting. I DO remember the pain from the second set of holes and the one i got in the cartilage of left ear. It is up to the parents. I have never heard of a baby having lasting effects from getting their ears pierced.

I personally will let any daughter of mine make the choice for herself.

It's my opinion that we're born with enough holes in our bodies. But many societies consider kids to be property, so.........

Agreed on sickening. I hope what you stated is true where you live; it is here. But in many places such as the Middle East and the Americas, kids legally are property. You can drill holes in them, tattoo them, etc.

I hate to take any more parental rights away from parents, or deprive them of the enjoyment of putting diamonds in their kids' ears, but dang it all, ear-piercing has no medical advantages, which circumcision does. Wives of circumcised men get less uterine and ovarian cancer, for one thing.

I don't personally like it but we need to stop making laws for everything.. Let a a Judge Judge if something is wrong and stop making laws for everything.

Too true! Have you notices that certain societies don't admit to the existence of common sense? Oh; wait.

There is nothing wrong with getting babies ears pierced. People have been doing it for centuries. Don't we have enough things we can't do already. Good Grief.

What about the risks involved or the pain caused?

Number one it isn't that painful, and as long as you keep them clean, and do what you're suppose to the risk is very small. I had my daughter's done when she was 3 never a problem. I was a teenager when I had mine done by my mother with a darning needle, and an eraser. Never had a problem.

I personally don't have an issue with it; this just came about because I was thinking of the similarities and differences between that and certain other practices.

Well since I don't know what other practices you are talking about I can't give a response to that.
All I know is that ear piercing is one of the easier, and safer things that people do. Now if you have it done in the mall then make sure they are using sterile equipment otherwise you can get an infection, but it's pretty easy to clear up. Like I said my mother did mine at home, and it was fine.
