Should parents be allowed to have their baby's ears pierced?

Depending on the country, it may or may not be common to see piercings in a baby's ear. Should this be allowed or should this be made illegal for safety concerns?

If we are to legislate parenting, let's keep it to clearly abusive behavior. This action has ancient history without clearly negative effects.

As long as the parents keep them clean and rotate them it should be okay, its actually better when their a couple months old because they older hey are the more chance of an infection toddlers are going to touch and pull at them, when done as an infant it becomes "normal" and they arent tempted to play with them

Piercing lobes is painless and not harmfully as long asthe parents clean it out. If the child does not want it in the future then they could let it grow back

There's nothing wrong with piercing a baby's ear. I got my ear's pierced when I was four months old. Nothing happened.

I dont think so!! In fact now you can get them done at doctor offices. When my girls were about 3 months old. Their doctor did their ears.

I think it is absurd and wreckless to do that to an infant. Let THEM decide WHEN they are old enough to make the decision for themselves!

If the parent doesn't want it, they are more than welcome to not do it. But to ban, I just don't see why

Are you kidding me? Of course that kind of thing should be up to the child.

I don't like it and I don't think it's a safe, but the government needs to stay out of it. Only the parent should make that decision.

Hell they can kill them right up until they take their first breath and call it "choice", why not start them off with two holes in their head.

Some people do have reactions to certain types of metal; many times the type of metal is nickle which is very reactive.

There's nothing wrong with getting a baby's ears pierced. My niece got hers done when she was about six months or so. If anything, I think it's easier then.

I know that in some culture it is considered necessary, but having had the experience of listening to a screaming terrified toddler and an equally upset technician arguing with a mother insistent on having this done, I question the necessity of it. I've seen too many little girls with NASTY infections because they do not know how to care for their ears and little kids just get dirty and they wear cheap metal or plastic earrings.

I personally don't like or agree with it, but it's not my decision. It's up to the parents to show good judgment. We can't outlaw everything that offends our delicate sensibilities-- we can only educate and discuss.

I agree, and that's what I would do, and that's what I would encourage all parents to do.

But I don't think we can justify *outlawing* it. Unless there's some kind of actual abuse on top of the act of piercing ears (like hitting a child for crying, or shaking them) then I have to stand back and say, "It's your child, and I disagree with what you're doing, but I have no right to stop you. I just hope they don't hate you for it later."

It's there baby but I think the child should have some say in if they have it done or not. Kids grow up fast enough as it is.

I don't think there are safety concerns with this. Studs, which they use to pierce an ear are nearly impossible for an adult to get off, so I don't think a baby could. I certainly don't want them choking on one. But I don't think this is a concern. So, it's not unsafe.

I look at it as it's my daughters choice. I didn't pierce her ears because I wanted that to be up to her. For her to say I want that. That's why I don't do it, but I don't think it needs to be illegal.
