Should Movie Theaters Encourage Social Media During Movies?

Movie theaters usually tell people to shut off their phones during a movie. Some theaters, however, encourage social media usage as a marketing gimmick. Do you think using social media like Twitter and Facebook in movies is a good idea?

If I owned a theater, social media would be jammed. If you want to socialize during the show, I will keep your money and you can go outside not to return. ;-)

You are talking hundreds of thousand of dollars to accommodate them. That would start escalating the cost of movies for everyone. It makes no sense at all.

All the more reason not to attend any theatres.

not unless they can be completely silently silent and let those who haven decided to pat extra to enjoy a somewhat special evening to themselves.

They need to work to get people to turn off all their gizmos. I turn off my phone at the movie.

Like what? Escaping the reality of a real life? I thought that was what movies were all about.

I refuse to pay for a movie to have some moron with no manners distract form the experience of what I have paid for. If you cannot turn your phone off for 2 hours you need psychiatric help.

I think Fef needs to clarify his post because there are two ways of reading into this.I believe what he's saying is they have movie commercials before the movie begins, promoting Facebook and the like.Similar to the ads on TV for Sodahead I've saw while the show is on.NOT promoting and asking you to use your cells for social media use while the movie is playing. That would make no sense to go to a movie paying money to use your cell for something that you can do free elsewhere it would be like going to a movie to put on your IPOD and listen to music.Of course some people would perhaps think after spending money on a movie it's time to socialize on line but more likely they would text.I go to the movies very often and several different theaters and for years now since some people are addicted to their cells especially the young. The movie theater not only has signs posted all over but before each movie begins and every single movie does this they have a warning on the screen and tell you at least two times before the movie begins. To not only to silence your cell phones but to turn them completely off as to not have the screen light up and distract viewers.Or you will be removed from the movie theater and they mean it! So idk if Fef goes to movies,or in CA he goes but I never, ever ...

So idk if Fef goes to movies,or in CA he goes but I never, ever heard of this and it makes no sense whatsoever. When one goes to a movie they tell others what they thought of it which in turn others might go because someone said the movie was good. How would that make the movie industry profit or the theaters if everyone was on a social site instead of watching the movie? So that's why I think he means that or he read it on the misinformationet.

I do not see it as encouragement at all. There are advertising. But that does not mean it should be done immediately. Surely there should be some common sense involved here.

That's what I said? Find us on Facebook ,Twitter etc...Is used often by the movie chains themselves before the movie, advertising about themselves. If people talk in movies ushers(we have rent-a cops) in our movies warn them or they are removed from the theater. So even if that doesn't happen people in the theater always in my experience have told people to stop talking during the movie and I think the same would hold true if they went and began going on social sites.

Because kids make up 90% of movie goers here they have security and they're bored stiff and they go from movie to movie looking for a reason for their job. They even have signs when they take your ticket no firearms or weapons allowed. So I leave my assault rifle in the trunk before the movie. WTF? lol Next will be metal detectors.

Well, I have no problem telling anyone to get out or calling management.

We do not have hand guns or concealed weapons on the streets.

I lived in the USA for a few years and so did my daughter. American have a very aggressive attitude about protecting belongings.

For Canadians that is extremely odd. Nothing material is worth killing over, everything is replaceable. I personally have house insurance and am not willing to get involved with guns if someone wants my computer or anything else. The insurance company will buy me a new one.

I believe that is one reason your crime rate is so high.

We had a new story a couple of weeks ago with a man from the mid-western states that was in Alberta vacationing.

He and his wife were walking down the street in Calgary and two young men stopped him and asked if he had been to the 'Stamped' yet. The man reported the incident to the police as a possible suspicious/theft/gang related episode. He told the police that he wished he had brought his gun with him for protection.

The entire story hit the front page of the new paper and it was hilarious. If you do not have at least one person in Calgary or even Alberta, ask you if you are going to the Stamped in July, you are NOT in Canada. In Canada we are FRIENDLY.

That story has been talked about for weeks, Americans need to relax and back off. Walking on the streets here is very safe.

I have watch Michael Moore befor. America hates him. He always has the audacity to tell it like it really is.

I saw the movie he did on health care is was awesome, yet the American thought it was a complete lie. He certainly was accurate as far as Canada was concerned.

Don't group me into the idiots in my country. lol You only hear about them because sometimes empty heads make the most noise. ;) Funny how all of his movies have pretty much been proved accurate,he's even offered money to people that can disprove some of his facts presented in some films,so far no takers.

You are right. I just found it amazing that so many American refused to believe the information about Canada when none of them had ever used the Canadian system.

I have also discussed the Canadian health care system here online and been called a liar by those who have never been to Canada. The myth about Canadian health care is alive and well in America. There is great fuel for the amount of objection to the Obama heath care system. I do not think that most people understand it at all.

I understand that completely as my daughter taught at the Univ of David CA. for a number of years.

She taught environmental science to masters students there and said that the language skills of the students was terrible. When she was marking papers and exams she also marked grammar and spelling. Her philosophy is that once you are at that level of education you should already have those skills or at the very least be using spell check.

The students complained to the Dean and she was reprimanded and told that she was not part of the English department and she could not do that. They had compartmentalized their education to that degree that they were failing to get a well rounded education.
