Should More Men Wear 'Mangagement' Rings?

With more women feeling free to pop the big question, it only makes sense that “mangagement” rings are growing in popularity.

In case their silly moniker wasn’t self-explanatory, mangagement rings (or engagement bands as many men prefer to call them) are the male counterparts to the traditional rings women wear to indicate they are engaged to be married. In a number of other countries, it has long been customary for men (in addition to women) to wear engagement rings. However, the practice has only recently gained traction in America.

According to a 2011 study by MensHealth.com and TheKnot.com, 5% of men are currently wearing mangagement rings and 17% say that they are open to the idea.

So you may be wondering, how exactly does a mangagement ring work? Well, according to ABC News there are a number of options for men who want to symbolically take part in the excitement of engagement.

Some men begin wearing their ring on their right hand, and then move it to their left hand during the wedding. Others wear the mangagement ring on their left hand and then upgrade to a nicer ring during the ceremony. Some men just begin wearing their wedding band early. While others choose to wear both a mangagement ring and a wedding band.

What do you think SodaHeads? Should more men wear mangagement rings?

If women are wearing it to signify the oncoming of a bonding ceremony, why can't men? They are both participating in the marriage right? No reason not to.

Is it really that big of a deal? If you don't want it don't wear it, and let the people who DO want it go ahead.

well, if the man wants to put a ring, let him, if he doesn't want to, don't force him. besides, i don't think there's any rule or obligation about having to wear an engagement ring for both men and women.

I think it's wrong that only women wear engagement rings.

There shouldn't be a 'have to' anything. If you want to, why not? If not, why not also? It's the 'have to' that makes me believe that the fancy jewellery on your left hand represents ownership, which is getting a little archaic. An engagement ring shouldn't be about ownership, it should be about that love has found you. This is such a non-issue. Just sayin'. Also, why are they called management rings, lol?

I think it should be up to the man. My boyfriend has mentioned that he likes them, so if he wants to wear one, who am I to stop him? If the man wants to wear one, I say go for it, but if he doesn't, then no big deal.

Marriage is outdated anyway. This whole concept of a ring indicating that your body is essentially owned by your partner is ridiculous.
But I suppose if a man was comfortable with it, sure.

Shouldn't they want to display they're engaged like women? Isn't that something to be proud of?

I suppose that would be up to the couple..If a man feels his woman should wear one and OMG most of us think we do..then maybe he should too...Personally I would say no..but that is just me ...but I just can't see a guy being as excited over a mangagement ring as we are over an engagement ring..I mean can you?? Yo, come see what I got..you ain't gonna believe it!...so its a ring big deal...No dude its a mangagement ring....Huh?? Yes she popped the big question...we set the date for August..isn't it beautiful (dude walks away shaking his head.)

How would this be different from the wedding rings men wear? Essentially it seems like you would be wearing your ring prior to the ceremony.

Management rings? that is stupid. Seriously. Call them engagement rings people, stop trying to make everything so freaking difficult. My fiance is already wearing his wedding ring, why not? Marriage is just a piece of paper. It's the commitment that matters

I would say that's a personal decision for each man. Do what seems right to you. That's what personal freedom is all about. I'm not going to judge some guy who wants the world to know he got the best lady he could ever dream of to consent to marry him. And I'm not going to cut down some guy who thinks rings do not matter. It's what's in your heart.

Let the man be a man and make his own decision.

Engagement ring on the right hand?

I would have never worn one. It would have gotten "lost".

Diamonds are combustible and often, but not exclusively, acquired by the longest lasting method of gorilla warfare and human trafficing. See "Blood Diamonds" for more details.

You take care now, knowing your token of love was payed for in blood, rape, enslavement and war crimes.
