Should Mom Be Jailed for Forging Doctor’s Notes for Kids?

SodaHead Living 2010/05/31 03:41:50
Sometimes moms are the ones who fake being sick.

California mother Kari Shannon Brandt, 38, is out on bail after being arrested last Tuesday for allegedly forging doctor’s notes for her children, the Willows Journal reported.

Prosecutors accuse Brandt of forging signatures and creating doctors’ notes on 12 occasions between December 2009 and April. The notes were written for three of Brandt’s children, ages 6, 7 and 8, in a reported effort to excuse them from West Street Elementary School in Corning, Tehama County District Attorney Gregg Cohen said.

“If (Brandt) would have expended as much effort at getting out of bed and getting her little ones to school as she did concocting and forging doctors’ notes, we would never have needed to get involved,” Cohen said.

Ummm....this isn't just a gutless mom writing notes for her lazy-ass kids, she is FORGING a doctor's note. Forgery IS A CRIME.

I've noticed on SH that a lot of people have no concept that when a law is broken there is punishment.

It's a sign of our times, I suppose, but "ignorance of a law is no exception" to the punishment of that law-breaking.

If they aren't sick they should be going to school. Forgery, yes. I hate to have to say this but she's a bad role model/parent and example for her kids.

Once again, a prime example of the enabled, enabling.....
Breaking the law is ok when done by a lazy parent why???????
    But nooo..
There are some bleeding hearts that don't consider this to be a crime. They think that a "suppossed crime' depends on who, what, where, when, and how a crime was committed. Regardless of what and whom the crime affects
What are parents like this teaching their poor kids?
    Absolutely nothing good that's forsure!!!

I will own up to having written ficticious notes to excuse my sons from PE - when they were being bullied in that lesson by other kids and by the teacher.

    Nothing to do with laziness.

It was never a doctor's note; rather me exaggerating a minor illness.

I agree with Betty 189. I can't imagine having to take a child to a doctor to have the child excused from school. And I think it's pretty far out to actually arrest and incarcerate someone for writing this kind of a note, crime or no crime, since no harm was done to anyone. Maybe the lazy lady should have gone to trial; she might have gotten OJ's jury.
BTW,-consider the law which says a child has to go to school at all. Now find the provision in the constitution for that law. It's not as if going to school will make a person either healthier, safer or more prosperous. (Ted Bundy vs Bill Gates)
Now let's tackle illegal immigration and fraud,-lying about one's birth place. (per Obama)

This amount to neglect. If a child is sick (but not sick enough for a doctor visit), certainly keep them home and write your own excuse for the absence, but don't fake a doctor note. If the child is actually sick enough for doctor's care, take them to the doctor. As a good parent, that is what you do. The schools accept a parent's excuse for one or two days off and this can extend to up to about 10 days per school year depending on the school district.

I do wonder why she did this. Bad school? She's lazy? Not strong enough emotionally to overrule her kids whining and psychological warfare against going to school? Whatever, I thought everyone in the US knew that it is illegal to forge a doctor's name for any reason.

Wow.. if you can't take you kid to the doctor tell the school! Get medicaid! If you have insurance, get off your ass and take your child to the doctor! Forgery is illegal. If there is a good reason for your children to miss that many days write a note from yourself. My mom wrote notes for me!

well im just thinking the school would only accept a Dr. note for abscences, if thats the case its ridiculous to have to take your kid to the dr. for every abscence, but i feel bad shes being charged with felonys, if she wouldnt have forged a dr. sig she just might have gotten away with maybe school suspensions for no dr. note, they just want to make it hard on people :(

But that is still breaking the law, plus it takes more time to stop when you're going faster. So if a kid ran in front of your car, would you rather be driving slower, or faster?

What happened to parents teaching integrity. I guess due to her age she didn't have a good example in her parents and now she's showing what she learned to her kids.

If that's what you value then it shows the break down of society. No, a crime is still a crime and we are a free country because we have laws that people are to follow. If it was your signature they were forging on a document you wouldn't brush it off so quickly. Wait until you experience identity theft and try to clear it up.
