Should Milk Be Banned From School Lunches?

Dairy milk has always been a staple in children's lunches. A battle over whether to include full-fat or low-fat milk was waged beginning in 1974 and into the 1980s, with a requirement for a dairy milk substitute to be provided based on dietary needs included in 2004. The latest update that goes live this month, require that only non- or low-fat milk be served with school lunches.

Even though dairy milk has always been around in school lunches, a petition from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine states that it is scientifically proven that milk is high in animal fats, animal protein, and sugar (derived from lactose), making the drink more harmful to bones, than helpful.

“Research also shows that children can get all the calcium they need from non-dairy sources,” says the petition, “such as beans, tofu, broccoli, kale, collard greens, breads, cereals, and non-dairy, fortified beverages, without any of the health detriments associated with dairy consumption.” The petition goes on to recommend calcium-fortified soy milk and rice milk as "good substitutes for dairy beverages."

To be human we have to separate us from animals. Most people chose to be animals despite that we have the ability to be more than animal. Eating meat is being animal. Don't being able to control the urge to eat meat is animal.

So, we're either animals, who have a place in the world, or aliens who don't. Quite frankly, I like this world.

Well, when the 'I'm only here to help you' crowd gets it to the point that everyone is running around in circles and munching on dried lawn clippings, maybe they'll run out of things to gripe about..... Nah, they will always find something. like everyone has to run counter clockwise or one can only munch on blue grass no more than 3/4 inch long. Remember, freedom is theirs, not yours....

No but we should ban school lunches.

The government should not feed people.

I don't think I'd like eating a sandwich for lunch everyday. I'd go insane.
After all, I don't have time to actually make real food.

Who can't afford to feed their kids?

Food is almost free and we have an obesity epidemic among the poor.

It's a myth and the government should not feed people.

A lot of people, which is often why my church was the most crowded when we gave away food. The reason why there are fat poor people is because all they can afford is low budget unhealthy food such as McDonald's from their money bumming. This school lunch system is good for those who cannot afford healthy food (which tends to be much more expensive) for their kids.

    Nope.

    People just want free stuff.

Chuches should give away food, the government should not.

Not everyone just wants free stuff. If you've noticed a great deal of the nation is well below the poverty line of somewhere around $20,000...

Since that may not happen altogether (maybe not even any time soon), or that may be harder to overcome we should continue with the aid of school lunches.

    My church does.

I give 10% of my earnings to my church and even more to the poor.

How much do you do for the poor?
  • mobilsq Heisenberg 2012/07/24 23:45:16
    mobilsq
nothing because I am poor. Giving money to a church with high overhead is not an efficient means of providing services to the the poor. Most of the money goes up the pyramid. Their is a fairly successful catholic church in my area and they have one single soup kitchen location serving 1 meal a day that meal consists of food that is better suited for disposal.

Actually the government is the most inefficient method of getting aid to the poor.

What is your experience with church relief efforts?

I worked for the government for 6 years. How about you?
  • mobilsq Heisenberg 2012/07/25 04:01:43
    mobilsq
the government seems pretty efficient and could be more efficient. You apply for foodstamps you either meet the criteria or not and then money is electronically disbursed and people buy what they want. Many of the verification processes are automated. I worked at that soup kitchen when I was younger. With a soup kitchen people have to find a way to get there and then eat inferior often out of date food. Getting there is not easy in many towns due to the lack of public transportation. On top of that the kind of people that go to soup kitchens typically have mental problems and smell like urine. So there is an element of shame in eating at one of these places.

Food is not almost free. I shudder at the thought that you could with no problem walk past a hungry child on the street & not feel for that child. It is not that child's fault that it doesn't have food to eat.

You also seem to think that government feeding is the only option. It is not.

You didn't even read the article did you?

The case is not about no food, it is about bad parenting.

Why did we have less poverty when there were no 'social programs'?

Gosh...half the kids in the US must have been starving to death...but they weren't...wonder why?

You don't get to steal my earnings just because you are too lazy to help people yourself.

By the way...what percentage of your earnings do you give to the poor on top of all the taxes?

With all the other crap that we allow kids to shovel into their little feeding holes. Milk is hardly the worst offender. Dairy is at least a legitimate member of the 4 food groups. It didn't even need any mental gymnastics by our government when they decided that Pizza should be deemed a vegetable.
