Should Milk Be Banned From School Lunches?

Dairy milk has always been a staple in children's lunches. A battle over whether to include full-fat or low-fat milk was waged beginning in 1974 and into the 1980s, with a requirement for a dairy milk substitute to be provided based on dietary needs included in 2004. The latest update that goes live this month, require that only non- or low-fat milk be served with school lunches.

Even though dairy milk has always been around in school lunches, a petition from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine states that it is scientifically proven that milk is high in animal fats, animal protein, and sugar (derived from lactose), making the drink more harmful to bones, than helpful.

“Research also shows that children can get all the calcium they need from non-dairy sources,” says the petition, “such as beans, tofu, broccoli, kale, collard greens, breads, cereals, and non-dairy, fortified beverages, without any of the health detriments associated with dairy consumption.” The petition goes on to recommend calcium-fortified soy milk and rice milk as "good substitutes for dairy beverages."

A national group of physicians argues that dairy milk should be taken off school lunch menus, but what's right for your kid?

Let the government ban everything and tell everyone what to eat, where to eat it, and when to eat. Replace school lunches with water and Soylent Green.

At school, we had Milk, Chocolate Milk, Strawberry Milk (umm), Minute Maids, Zimmerman's Iced Teas, Lemonades and Orange Drinks and other things. Dairy is good for you, unless there's a substantial increase of lactose intolerant in one city, which is kinda bad.

I can agree that some schools should really step up their school lunch quality, I mean, it's a grade school, not jail. Although I can agree that it feels like jail sometimes. Haha. It took till I was in 10th Grade when school lunches were changed for the better, they did get rid of soda machines and replaced them with Vitamin Water (Which is just glorified sugar water), Life Water, Minute Maids, etc, a lot more healthier and better cooks and menu. I used to go to one of the best school districts in PA too. Though since my class graduated, looks like its been downhill...

However, Milk should not be banned. I agree there's fat and sugar in some milks, but that is only based on where they get the milk. What cows they abused. Etc. Let's put it in the government's head that some fats and sugars are necessary for healthy bodies. Moderation is the key.

Diet sodas replace the sugar with an unstable chemical called Aspartame. It's in those zero-calorie packets like Equal, Spoonful, etc. Read here: ^^ http://articles.mercola.com/s...

Yeah but us diabetics have no choice we either use sugar free stuff or nothing, and I am tired of nothing it tastes lousy.

Yeah, but you also have to be careful what kind of sugar free stuff you are using because of special nasty effects in that stuff. (Be wary of the FDA and what they approve and not. Just because FDA approves something to be safe, does not mean it is really safe...) Aspartame is one of the worst sweeteners you could use. :/

    Taken from: http://www.3fatchicks.com/spl...
"I will explain why Aspartame is so dangerous: When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to
formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants. The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus."

Not only that but with the amount of sodium that is in it only makes u more thirsty. Hence drinking more after that one is finished.

Not if the drink is low in sodium like the A-Treat sodas that are distributed in the Middle Atlantic States, I keep to the local brewery for sodas, very low sodium, low calories, and still tastes excellent. Costs 39.8% less than PepsiCola or Coca-Cola. I don't have to shell out 4.99 a 12-can pack or 6-bottle pack... ^^

This has turned into a moronic society. We got by just fine without all the so called experts getting into our parents business. Even drank out of the hose nozzle, ate moon pies and drank RC cola. We all managed just fine without the damn experts moving their lips every ten minutes. That is the problem with mass communication that these young folks love so much, too damn many experts dispensing advice no one asked for.

Not really. The government is providing the education and food, so the decision what to teach and serve in school is decided be EXPERTS. We don't let creationists whack jobs decided the curriculum for the same reason we don't let some obese parent decide the lunch menu. Stop whining and be appreciative that some people want the best for you.

Your the one that is whining. The TAXPAYER is the boss, not the civil servant. One size fits all only puts blisters on half the peoples feet. The so-called experts can merely reach a consensus. It is extremely rare for even 2/3 of the experts to agree on anything specific. go peddle your snake oil somewhere else..

I believe one of the biggest problems with America is that they don't trust experts, and that is why out children don't get educated the right way, and that is why we see creationists and other fringe ideas being pushed into our school systems. And here we have another kook is believes fat Chiniqua down the street is going to decide what my children should eat in school. Hell to the no!
