Should middle school nurses be allowed to distribute condoms and other forms of birth control without parental consent?

As long as the sex is safe, it's really the kids' private business. Also, promoting safer sex significantly reduces the chances of pregnancy, AIDS, unwanted STDs, etc etc. Not to mention it teaches/prompts/guides boys, if they choose to have sex, to respect their partner's body condom safer sex

Kids need to be well educated about sex and have access to protection before puberty. Just because they are educated about it and given free condoms doesn't mean they are going to have sex. In fact even though I was educated about sex from age 5 by my parents and my school told us how it happens in 7th grade; I didn't have sex till I was 16 and that boy is my husband now.

Teenagers are going to have sex. You can wish and pray all you want, but teenagers be horny. If it cuts down pregnancies and STDs, so be it.

While I don't agree with kids so young having sex, in the end if they're going to do it no one can stop them and they might as well be safe and have the proper instruction on how to use them. I'd rather hear my future little one come to me and tell me s/he had sex at 12-15 then come to me and tell me they're going to be a parent or contracted something b/c they weren't safe.

not handing out condoms doesn't stop them from having sex, education about the risks does. Just look at all the girls getting pregnant by 8th grade or even before now. So we know they are having sex, wouldn't you rather they use condoms if they are going to do it anyway?

Absolutely! Otherwise, these students would not be having "safe sex" with their teachers!

Do you think sexually active kids are going to ask a parents permission? Do you think being without "protection" is going to stop it?? Not for long, if at all! It's that, or possible pregnancy OR AIDS! The choices are not good. The best choice is obvious, and praying will help few...if any. I'd rather not have my daughter going through a vagina check to satisfy a "governor", either.

MIDDLE SCHOOLS? The SCHOOL should require PARENTS to sign a "statement of known fact" whether or not their kid is sexually active or not. NO school should have to have anything to do with the kids and their personal behavior choices. I'm all done making life easier for everyone who can't bother to do what they're supposed to do.

Although the thought of people having sex in middle school is kind of disturbing, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Middle school is ages 9-13 and the answer is no! These kids should have their minds on study, sports, games and fun,-not sex. I think the education system is staffed by liberal sex perverts. (just like the media & Hollywood)

they SHOULD...however, today's kids are FAR more sexually aware and experienced than most of us were at the same age. I can agree with condoms....the kids would be better served to use them than not to and it's a non-chemical/invasive/SAFE method. Hey, don't get me wrong...I'm ALL about abstinence, but I'm also a realist.

Really? I thought middle school was 11-14 (although that's kind of pushing it when it comes to passing out contraception)

You talk about "liberal sex perverts" from the media and Hollywood corrupting our children. Then you use a picture of Laurel and hardy as your icon? Very inappropriate. They represent the very best that Hollywood has ever contributed to our culture and society!

I was refering to today's standards. L&H were 2 of the best at bringing smiles to people's faces during the Depression during the 30's (before & after),-they didn't have to curse or use sex in their movies to entertain us.
Progressives believe that the sexual revolution of the 60's made life better for society,-but has it?

I love Laurel and Hardy. The International Convention of the "Sons of the Desert" named after their movie will be held in Manchester, New Hampshire, in July. It is dedicated to preserving their memory and their films! That will be our vacation!

Well, this liberal sex pervert who works in education has to deal with parents who are completely absent and do NOTHING to educate their children about sex.

That's because these 'parents' for the most part never learned what parenthood is about; they believe 'love' and 'freedom' equal good parenthood and saying 'no' is cruelty.
I've had several very good teachers in my life and I know there are still good teachers out there but most have their hands tied by the system as well.
But the sexual revolution of the 60's and now emploed by education does not teach roles of motherhood & fatherhood, family life, etc., and the result is a chain of continued single families and out of control kids.

so I guess that all those girls getting pregnant by the time they are in eighth grade means middle schoolers aren't having sex? When I was in a freshman in high school(2000) there were 2 girls who were pregnant in eight grade. Our school didn't give out condoms back then.
  • Flash,a... rosesve... 2012/05/29 22:40:39
    Flash,aka,Mr.Lightning
So the schools now hand out condoms and teach oral sex (they do).
What about teaching the 'close your legs' practice until an adult? They could show examples of early pregnacy and the aftermath that follows.
But the main culprits are the PARENTS and their not teaching their kids about life.

The ones who are having sex are the ones who have the babies? Right? My mother told my sister and me, that when we were ready to have sex, let her know and she would buy us codoms. My sister decided to have sex unlike me ( not for lack of trying), but take a guess which of us dropped out of school in 11th grade because she was pregnant. And she was a grandmother at 37. Never graduated but hey, my mom gave her and her idiot boyfriend condoms! What happened? I'll tell you. You give them the green light and when they run out or the school nurse or mom isn't there to pay for their jimmy hats then they do it anyway.

Giving someone condoms isn't giving them a green light to have sex. it's telling someone they trust their child enough that they don't want them to be stupid IF the choose to use them. When I was 13 my mom gave me condoms. I'm 22 and only JUST had my 1st kiss last year. I'm still a virgin with no plans to change such so far. My mother wanted me to be safe if I choose to, she and my dad didn't agree with underaged sex, but at the same time they also knew that teenagers have "urges" and most wouldn't think before "trying out their new bodies" The only thing my mother asked (my dad didn't care to know, hes a dad after all and I am his "little girl") was if i decided to use them to talk to her 1st. I for one am glad she trusted me, I think it helped me make it through junior high and high school and now part of collage b/c she trusted me enough to give me,,,,well I used them as balloons XD.

Congratulations. The fact of the matter is, children who are taught not to have sex and then practice those teachings do not become pregnant or end up with stds. Look how well you turned out. Any kids? Any diseases?

I'm a virgin and I wasn't taught not to have sex. I was taught to be smart about my choices. Teaching a kid not to have sex will make them want to do it more. It's why sex is so explored. My mom sat me down and had a talk with me at a young age. Left me readings, explained to be the ins and outs and left me to figure out the rest. I'm the product of trust and acceptance. Not abstinence.
  • tony Undead ... 2012/05/29 02:08:00

Yet you practiced abstinence. Look, teaching abstinence does not mean your children do not know what a condom is. It is irresponsible of parents to NOT teach abstinence. My oldest child is 5. And you better believe I'll be doing everything I can to make sure I'm not a grandpa before I'm 60. (I'm 38 now). But I sure as hell will not be handing my kids condoms and will be damned pissed off if someone else does.

Your error is assuming that kids won't have sex if their parents or teachers don't provide condoms. I can guarantee you your sister would have still gotten pregnant (probably quicker) if your mother wouldn't have bought her condoms. Condoms aren't 100%, but they're FAR more effective than a "don't have sex" talk.
Kids also need to know HOW to use them properly. I also believe that parents of girls should encourage them to go on some other type of birth control too. Once again, nothing is 100%, but 95% is a heck of a lot better than 0%.

I know you're young, but try and follow. The teens that DON'T have sex, DON'T have babies! Simple! End of story! Show me something that proves me wrong and I'll apologize! Abstinence, when used, is bulletproof!
