A 33-year-old Sydney fireman, Johnny McGirr, was asked by Virgin Australia flight staff to swap seats with a female passenger. He said he was approached and told he had to move. When he asked why, he was told, ”Well, because you are male, you can’t be seated next to two unaccompanied minors.” He said he thought the request was sexist and discriminatory, but was told it was the airline’s policy.

McGirr's wrote a formal complaint to the airline, describing his embarrassment. “As I collected my things from the seat pocket I could see people looking at me and wondering why I was being moved. I was red from embarrassment. I felt like I was being judged and found guilty of a crime I hadn’t committed. It was an uncomfortable situation and I felt ashamed which was a weird feeling because I hadn’t done anything wrong.” Do you think it's OK if a male sits next to unaccompanied minors on flights?

ABCNEWS.GO.COM reports:
A flight attendant asked 33-year-old Sydney fireman Johnny McGirr to switch seats with a woman after he was seated next to two young boys on an April flight, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. McGirr, who wrote about his experience in a blog post titled “My Virgin experience as a Paedophile!” said he was traveling to Brisbane from Sydney and seated next to two boys he estimated to be ten years old.

I was molested by 2 women. About 15% of child molestation is done by women, but the feminists don't want you to know so no one talks about it.

But what you say is disrepectful of men. By your logic it's ok to assume women are prostitues since most positutes are women. This type of thinking and your's is logically flawed. You specifically make the "Appeal to Probability" -"because it COULD happen, it WILL happen" Since less then 2% of all adult males are sex offenders your appeal to probability is fallacious. Now if 50% or more of all males were offenders you would have a case but the chances are so low that your argument falls on it's face, just as my arguement about all women being whores wold fall on it's face.

There was no evidence he intended any harm towards these children. The cabin staff should have at least informed him of their policy before he sat down.

As the airlines assigns you seats, they should have made sure that the child (who really should not be flying alone) was not given a seat next to a man. Not agreeing with their policy just saying that it should have been handled before people even entered the plane.

This is discriminating and I can understand how he was so embarrassed. Not all men are peadophiles and you do get woman peadophiles too I'm sure. It's a shame that they are tarring all men with the same brush and it's a disgrace.

Men should sit next to the pretty women.

Kids can sit in the back of the plane - with the airline supplied baby sitter, so the moms can sit in the front with the men!

    (Just kidding of course!)

You’re kidding of course, but I would like to say, yes they can, but usually with older under age males like 15 yrs and up. More so nowadays. Don’t really make them pedophiles’ but they are looked at as disgusting trash.

Damn, where were these women when I was 15-16 yrs old? Uh,.. A young boy's fantasy.

However, Lg % of men are the pedophiles and usually with boys more than girls
Pedophilia is almost always some type of sexual childhood CRIME on them when they were very young growing up.

I'm not even going to argue with that, because it's not relevant. The point is that this is discrimination without sufficient reason to justify it.
Treating the entire sex like criminals is a dick move. I'm a man, and the older I get, the more I feel that I can't show kindness or be friendly towards children. I kid you not, I once got admonitions and questions from people for giving a little girl on crutches a ride to her bus stop.

I agree, remember the retired medical Dr. from India in a book store and went to the children’s book section and they (the book store attendant) asked him to leave because he was without accompaniment of an adult woman or a child in that section of the store. He was looking for a book for his grandchildren.

They said it was company policy.
No lone men allowed in the childrens book section.

ok, as a flight attendant that has had concerns about this n the past, this hits home hard. This man is absolutely right---it IS sexist and discriminatory. But as much as I hate this about myself, when I see a man seated next to a UM that seems to be paying a bit too much attention to them, all my instincts are on alert, and I keep a VERY close eye on the situation. If the same UM is seated next to a woman? No problem, and like I said, I HATE this about myself because I detest any kind of sexism, sterotyping, or general unfairness. I want to say that society has taught us to fear and distrust men more than women, but the fact is, pedophiles are predominantly male. But this is a situation that truly IS horribly unfair to men, and I'm proud of this guy for contacting the company. My airline doesnt have a policy in place where this is concerned, and I dont think they should either, they just need to be dilligent in keeping on eye on UM's and what may be going on around them. If I can seat a UM next to a woman as opposed to a man, I will, just to keep the worry factor down. Even when I do that, I'm aware of the unfairness of it. I meant to check "yes".

Well said Jo. It may be unfair, extremely unfair, but if is not your company policy now, it soon will be. Why? Because the insurance company will dictate the policy. If a child is touched inappropriately, the victims family will sue the airline who will turn the case over to insurance. So we can expect the insurance company to dictate policy.

I only say this though because I was very scared of men when I was little. If I was little again I would have preferred to sit next to a female.

Kids have an equal chance of being molested by females along side males. Besides, even if they [the airline] claim worry over the kids safety, they could have just checked up on them periodically throughout the flight.

What would happen if it was a father and his children sitting together on a plane? Would they still be separated because of gender?

If it was me I would be pressing a lawsuit. I mean unless there is a way to prove that the guy was a threat in some way, she should be allowed to sit anywhere on the plane. the fact that he is a man should not matter in any way!
