Most little girls go through a phase where they play with Barbie dolls. And given that she's had every possible career, isn't it time for Barbie to reach out to kids with cancer? A Facebook movement is under way to create a "Bald Barbie" for young girls going through chemotherapy or suffering from other hair loss conditions, the "Today" show reports.

barbie

According to the Facebook page, called Beautiful and Bald Barbie!: "We would like to see a Beautiful and Bald Barbie made to help young girls who suffer from hair loss due to cancer treatments, Alopecia or Trichotillomania." The page, which went up in late December, had 98,588 "likes" as of Friday.

"My daughter is battling leukemia right now and she's been going through chemotherapy for the last two years," Beckie Sypin, one of the mothers behind the campaign, told the "Today" show. "We think [a bald Barbie] would be therapeutic and I think it would help baldness become more quote unquote normal."

Mattel issued a statement Thursday: "Mattel appreciates and respects the passion that has been built up for the request for a bald Barbie doll. As you might imagine, we receive hundreds of passionate requests for various dolls to be added to our collection. We take all of them seriously and are constantly exploring new and different dolls to be added to our line." Hmm ... sounds kind of noncommittal. Do you think Mattel should create a Bald Barbie?

Its a little depressing. I mean a kid has cancer and their parents give them a bald barbie? No. Parents will probably get them normal barbies to let their kids feel as normal as possible. I mean you get a sick barbie isn't that rubbing it in that the poor kid has cancer? Idk i just know the last thing i would want if i had cancer would be a bald barbie. I mean im sick, my barbie's sick, is there any hope? Its kinda depressing...

how can you say it's dumb? It would be for a great cause. Instead of children being stared at for having no hair or being teased because of it this might be a way to open little girls up to the idea that with or without hair they are beautiful. It's about time Barbie sets some real expectations.

selling a doll with out hair is a rip off.

you might as well sell a doll with removable hair.
  • jeni Utall 2012/01/16 13:42:59
    jeni
why? just because it's not the "norm" you call it a rip off?

no! your spending more for less, a barbie without hair is like cake without flour.

plus little girls more times than now will not want to play with a bald doll.

I don't think that would help her much. I think Barbie has been so overdone - she has been over rated as what a little girl should be like - now going the othee was is just more PC. I would think a little girl that has lost her hair would like to play with a doll with hair so that she can dream of getting better.

Why not? I think it'd be nice for a little child with cancer to play with a dill that has some resemblance.

I don't see anything wrong with it.

Certainly a better barbie than Nicki Minaj or the Kardashians.

OK, I’m an oncologist, and even I think this is a stupid idea! This is just PC-ness taken to yet another extreme. I actually like kids to have bald toys, but cutting off or yanking out the hair, with permission, is pretty excellent!

LOL. I like your idea better. Yanking the hair out does sound like more fun than someone just handing you a weird, bald headed Barbie.

And while they're at it, they could create a Barbie that's more anatomically realistic. If the current Barbie was real and stood 5'9", her torso measurements would be 39, 18, 33. Her feet would be size 4, her legs would be 41", she'd have a 8" neck and a size 3 head. Not only that she'd weigh 110 and have a body mass index of 16, which would be classed as anorexic.
Giving a kid with cancer a bald, anorexic doll is nuts.

Not a barbie that will be played with. I am sure it would be a good collector's item for the kids. I guess it would be up to the kids if they want to play with it or not. There is not other option. Or undecided.

Absolutely , if They give a barbie to them SKANK ass Kardashians... Then, it would truely complete "the female experience" having a mother who is a breat cancer survivor and the countless friends who have to look in the mirror at the constant reminder of that cancer(the aforementioned bald head) I would welcome such a doll and pay money for it... And what would EVEN be better, the money would go to cancer research, to wipe out such a thing as cancer... That is my wish, actually!!!;-)

It helps in a way, I mean when a child gets a babie with long hair and they cant understand why they dont have long hair. Make it an option so that if it does come to that it can be used as a mean of therapy. Children ask themselves alot, next thing you might be getting the little child think there is something wrong with them, when the only example they see is very different to what they are.

I appreciate what Mattel is trying to do, but our children need to be children they are innocent and that innocence doesnt last very long. I don't think it's a very wise to burden children with the effects of how cancer ravages the body. I don't look to Mattel or any other company for parental advise. Believe me all Mattel is worried about is $$$$$

What mattel should do is make a bunch of these baldheaded cancer barbies(complete with which kind of cancer the child has) and GIVE that barbie to her... That would be one way of seeing how well it would be received
  • Twinky patchulie 2012/01/14 23:44:05

How would they specify the types of cancer? And why?

You never know if kids WANT to be singled out or if they want to be like everyone else... Information and education is always a good thing... Making barbies WITH this info, just seems like a good idea, and the money made from these dolls should go to researching why it exists in the first place... And if them skank ass Kardashians get a barbie(which I don't know why) and they will make a fortune... Somebody needs to speak fir these children... and I am sick and tired of them being exploited
