Should Kids Drink Coffee?

We're actually shocked by this: Today's kids are so "overscheduled" they need a cup of coffee to stay awake. Really?

That's what Dr. Roshini Raj tells the "Today" show.

"Kids are really overscheduled these days," Raj said. "They have so many extracurricular activities, plus their homework -- they're looking for ways to really stay awake."

Either moms and dads need to put the breaks on all the violin and Mandarin lessons, or Junior needs to stop surfing the Web until 1 a.m.

Kids shouldn't need coffee to stay awake!

We're also concerned about the affect of caffeine on teens and tweens, who are apparently consuming more coffee drinks. But Dr. Nancy Snyderman tells the "Today" show she's more worried about the calories in the types of Starbucks-style coffee drinks kids favor.

"Here lies the real danger: In an obesity-troubled society already, you can easily have a 400 or 600-calorie drink," Snyderman told "Today."

"If it tastes good, and it's sweet and it's filled with fat, you might be better just having a chocolate shake that, frankly, gives you more calcium. There are a lot of empty calories in this."

Coffee has adverse effects on children/kids/teens.
    These include:
    ◘jitteriness and nervousness
    ◘upset stomach
    ◘difficulty concentrating
    ◘difficulty sleeping
    ◘increased heart rate
    ◘increased blood pressure

Of course if an adult drinks enough they will get the same effects. Experts say kids shouldn't drink too much coffee as it contains caffeine a substance that can affect your brain, in Medieval Times it was even considered a drug.

...not regular caffeinated. Decaf is okay, black coffee is an excellent blood cleaner.
  • Jackie 2013/07/17 15:11:53
All caffeine should be limited to minut amounts at best.

I was told growing up that it would stunt your growth. I don't know if that's true but it sure makes kids hyped up.

When the kid is young, give 'em a taste of HOT black coffee. It will be so nasty that they won't even think about it for a long time!
  • Jesse 2013/07/16 23:23:27
Of course they should... while they're getting their abortions without their parent's knowledge, etc.

Time to rein in the overscheduling.

Kids shouldn't start drinking coffee until maybe fifteen.

The first time I drank coffee I was about 5 or 6 years old and I remember loving the taste. I didn't drink it on a frequent basis until high school though. Can being over caffeinated have negative effects? Sure drinking coffee is much healthier than kids drinking awful soda or even worse energy drinks. Provided they don't put a ton of sugar into it anyway.

Kids, especially teens, also need school hours in sync with their biological clocks. Yes, many kids are "overscheduled," but no matter how you restrict a child's agenda, having to get up at 5 am for school that starts at 7 am is going to leave a teen (most of whom biologically can't fall asleep before 11 pm but need 8.5-9.25 hours of sleep per night) sleepy. Most educators now understand this but can't change school hours because too often politics and money override what's best for health, safety, & learning. The solution may be to limit how early any school can start, so that local communities can more easily do what's right for kids when they set their particular schedules. If you'd like to see this on the national agenda, please sign the We the People petition on the WhiteHouse.gov website. But hurry--if this petition gets 5000 signatures by November 2, 2011, the White House will issue an official response. Any American 13 or older can sign. To do so, go to this link: wh.gov/2qJ

Yes, I believe kids should be able to drink coffee.
Despite the bad effects, it's also good for you too. I don't really see the problem with it.. It's better than seeing kids do drugs and other really bad stuff. Why not let them? It's their choice to drink it or not. I think, In my opinion, parents are just being a little over protective. Coffee helps you stay alert and reduce health problems from what I've read.

its true that we are getting over scheduled, but some of it is stuff we like to do, but if we need something to keep us awake we are doing to much, plus coffee is just nasty

Coffee is bad for your heart. The claim is that they don't think coffee causes heart problems, but if you have any heart condition it will make it worse.

From experience I can say that I don't know if coffee can cause heart problems but I do know that it does make a heart condition worse.

Is it worth the risk on growing often over stressed young hearts? Same goes for other drinks that have high amounts of caffeine.

WTF? What happened to parents being parents and actually raising their children the right way instead of trying to be their friend? Hell no kids don't need coffee.
  • kelly 2010/07/22 16:01:39
I don't think kids should drink coffee as there are a lot of adverse effects. However, I still want to drink coffee because I love it and probably couldn't survive without it. Honestly though, aren't energy drinks more of a problem than coffee? At least coffee has some healthful properties; energy drinks certainly don't! (Although I love those too!)

Basing on the adverse effects, they say it is bad for kids.

Well I made an experiment because there was not ehough proof for me.
Since two months I have begun drinking 2-3 cups of coffee per day,now I got to 8,August is the last month but I don't think I will succeed.
My heart hurts,I'm having insuperable headaches every day,I'm being paranoid,hallucinations....right now my sight is getting worse,I hope it'll pass.
In the experiment time,I'd want to mention,I am eating only coffee.

. . .I just think it's yummy. . . But it doesn't help me stay awake at all; if anything makes me sleepy.

Why not especially since they, like adults, have to get up early too to go the school. If you drink coffee and have to get up early in the morning, you'd be a hipocrite to say no.
