Should it be illegal for partners to live together in a romantic relationship without marrying?

Dave The Canuck 2012/05/03 20:31:22
Cohabitation without marriage should be illegal.
There should be no law against unmarried cohabitation.

According to wikipedia, unmarried cohabitation is still illegal in Mississippi, Virginia, Florida, and Michigan by opposite-sex partners. However, these laws are rarely enforced, and cohabitation was once illegal in all 50 states.

What year is this again? You shouldn't have to freaking MARRY someone in order to live with them. Did it ever occur to people that maybe not everyone wants to get married? And those that do would like to at least experience the other person's quirks by living with them first before they make such a huge commitment to be with them and all of those quirks "for life?" Those overly religious people really are just clinging to the past here. Newsflash: times have changed.

Of course not!. What is this Asia? The Middle East? NO! This is the usa where people can make there own decisions on how to live there lives. If I want to live with my girlfriend or boyfriend (if I had one) before getting married I certainly would. Consider it a trial version of what living together will be like.

Hah, it's illegal in Virginia? No one told my sister's landlord this! She lives with her boyfriend, and for a while one of his male friends from military school lived with them as well.

Wtf??? Of course not! Living together before marriage helps people learn and farther get used to one anothers habits. As for those simply living together, not everyone believes in marriage, it should be their choice to live together and not form a union if they so wish.

I find no issue with cohabitation. Plus how do you know if things with your partner will work out. That could be one of many reasons for cohabitation.

If this law was to be passed where I live then 93% of the citizens would be in jail.

This is a pretty weird question if ya ask me.

As long as two people make the choice of their own free will the government should stay out of it! You'd think they would have better things to worry about like the state of our economy.

I would discourage it, only because marriages are more likely to fail when there has been pre-marital cohabitation.

I understand your point but being against God and being illegal are two separate things. Do we need more government control? When it come to God we each have to follow our own heart and do what is right for us. I don't think giving the government more control to make our moral choices illegal is a good thing.

Nope. People have too much to worry about without having to track down who's obeying the Lord or not. The wicked will continue to do wickedly and the righteous will continue to live righteously. You can't make a theocratic law governing people's lives. That's why we have separation of church and state in America. Besides, if you make living together illegal, you might as well start making homosexuality, telling lies and other sins illegal, too. That's all based on Biblical law of course.

I think that's another personal right that the government should have absolutely no say in. A bunch of politicians have no business dictating who we can and cannot live with. There are plenty of other things they have no business dictating either, but I'll not get into that and just say that the government needs to stay out of such matters.
