To quote the famous host of The Price Is Right: “I’m Bob Barker reminding you to help control the pet population – spay and neuter your pet today.” On a more serious note, the following statistics as reported by PetRescue.Com should be considered: 1. Every day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born in this country while only 10,000 people are born.
    2. It's simple math - there just aren’t enough homes for all of these animals.
    3. Every year 10-12 million animals are euthanized in shelters for lack of available homes.
    4. On average, 64% of all animals taken into shelters nationwide have to be euthanized for this reason.
    5. At least 50% of the overpopulation problem is non-neutered males. Females can’t do it alone.
    6. Purebreds account for 30% of all the animals in shelters. "Papers" don’t mean an animal should be bred.
    7. For every home you find for an animal that you have bred, a home is lost for a shelter animal.
    8. Breeding to "see the miracle of birth" demands that you also "see the tragic results". Visit a shelter.
    9. Animal overpopulation has reached a crisis point in this country.
    10. You personally can make a difference by spaying or neutering your pet. It is the single most important thing you can do to prevent animal cruelty!

    More Reasons:
Spaying or neutering your pet provides many practical benefits as well as preventing animal overpopulation: your pet is more content and far less likely to roam, bite, scratch, fight, mark territory or develop uterine, mammary or testicular cancer.
The latest medical findings indicate that your pet, male or female, will be healthier and live a longer life if it is spayed or neutered.

to me it depeands on where you live if u live in an area where u know ur lil pup/cat has access to others of its kind and you're not prepared for unplaned pregancies with ur buddy and his/her mates then neuture but if ur in a sitchuation like mine where your pets dont see the outside world less your with them and their on a lead where you can make sure no one's going to make or have any pups/kittens then don't get them fixed.

I think that it's most important for an outdoor cat to be spayed or neutered and not an indoor cat, but indoor cats can also spray on things and cause issues within the home if they are not as well. I say both is always safe.

I think that this is really a good thing in the long run for the pet. It reduces their chances at undectible cancers and reduces the pet population. But I think age is important consideration and it is still the owners choice.

I have numerous animals of both gender...If I hadn't had them spayed/neutered how many more would I have??

My hubby is, I am....It's the most responsible thing that any one could do!

There are too many unwanted animals out there...this is their best chance to enjoy a long and healthy life. Contrary to popular myth-it is NOT good for an animal to have a litter prior. What they don't know, won't hurt them. And, unless you have homes for how many may be in the litter-it is totally irresponsible!

BTW- they still have the desire, they just can't multiply...kinda like humans! :)

Unless you are legit breeder (breeding quality animals: for disposition & conformation) any family pet should be spayed or neutered. Only a few out a litter are "show" quality, the rest are "pet" quality. Back yard breeders have overbred & destroyed many of the best qualities we look for in various different breeds of animals (esp dogs). For reasons of overbreeding & quality of breeding house "pets" should be altered.

One thing they usually live longer when spayed or neutured. Males get prostrate cancer sometimes when not fixed, and females can get breast cancer. We have too many pets that are desperate for a loving home. So we sure don't need more puppies. I adore puppies, but I always try to remember those older dogs that people get tired of and send to doggie prison to be euthanized because they are either "moving", or want a puppy, or didn't train their dog to have manners, or didn't fence their yard for their dog. It's so sad for these poor innocents, whose owners are so unfeeling and selfish. Ooops! Sorry...didn't mean to get on my soapbox.

House pets absolutely should be spayed/neutered. Animals are just naturally territorial and unaltered animals can become more aggressive in defending their territory. In addition, unaltered cats will "spray" inside the house and can quickly become a major problem for their owners, who often end up abandoning them. Also, if you have both male and female cats, as I do, you can't expect to not have kittens if you don't have your cats fixed. Any of these scenarios will eventually mean more unwanted animals, and that is just heartbreaking.

It's very important to get them spayed/neutered.....I work at a Vets office and I try to explain this everyday to people. There are a lot of health issues that can come to be later in life if you don't. Spayed/Neutered pets are happier, healthier and live longer than non spayed/neutered pets.

Even though I'd like to have a puppy from each of my female dogs I've had them spayed. I couldn't keep all of the puppies and would worry about whether they were being well taken care of if they went to other homes.

I work with animal rescue organizations and also the local humane society. If more pets were spayed an neutered, animal shelters might not be overflowing with throwaway pets that end up being euthanized. The heck with designer pets - please be responsible.

There are so many stray dogs and cats that unless you specifically want to breed the animal you should get it spayed/neutered. No reason to add to the multitude of strays left to the fates in the pound.

Besides an unspayed pet is tough to keep at home when the wander LUST hits them. And the smell from male cats around the house where there is an unspayed female is overwhelming and offensive.

When I went to SPCA to look for a pet I was told that before you took a dog or cat home they would have to be spayed and/or neutered. I saw nothing wrong with that since there are so many out there anyway. I wanted a cat who would stay in the house and not be outside roaming the countryside and that is what I have.

All pets should be fixed, their are to many animals running lose. There is someone in my neighbor hood that has a lab, and about every 8 months, I get 2 to 3 puppies dumped on my front porch, If you do not want these pets, the get them fixed, the human society here will do it for $25, for cats, and $35 for dogs, so get your pets fixed.

15 million dogs are euthanized each year. This does not include numbers from testing facilities, fighting / other "sports," unreportable, i.e. hit by cars, etc., or "kulled"--owners drown or otherwise kill newborn pups from unintentional pregnancies. PETA rec's 5 yr ban on all breeding. Many dogs at shelter are full-blooded. Puppy mill breed dogs turn out puppies until the mothers die--never coming in contact with grass or love from a human, or basic medical care. They are bred until they die, miserable and alone. If you EVER buy a puppy from a pet store, this is what their parents endure, although the stores deny it. Do a little research, and you will see. Humans aren't smart enough to breed to improve the species or choose not to breed when they shouldn't; why would those same humans be responsible enough to make the right decision when it comes to their pet? I've seen dogs that were faithful companions for 10+ years wind up in the shelter b/c their pet no longer fit their lifestyle. PLEASE, I'M BEGGING, READ: http://www.crean.com/jimwillis/hcy.html

"I've seen dogs that were faithful companions for 10+ years wind up in the shelter b/c their pet no longer fit their lifestyle."

I've seen the same situation occur with cats. What are people thinking???

As for what you've said about the puppy mills, it makes me SICK!

If you MUST buy a puppy (you just have to have that certain breed to show off to your buddies), NEVER buy a puppy from a pet store!

If you're humane enough to at least buy through a breeder, make sure they're a reputable breeder. Check references, check the better business bureau, heck, google them. If someone had a bad experience with a breeder, chances are they've voiced their concerns online!

All pets should be neutered/spayed if not used for breeding purposes by responsible breeders. Too many dogs and cats are abandoned because the owners did not do their homework on the breed(s). Marky :o)
