Should honor student be suspended for buying skittles from classmate at school?

W_C 2008/03/13 00:27:37
Too bad, adults get punished even if they don't "know" the law.
Seriously??? Suspension is harsh punishment for buying a bag of candy!

Contraband candy has led to trouble for an eighth-grade honors student in Connecticut.

Michael Sheridan was stripped of his title as class vice president, barred from attending an honors student dinner and suspended for a day after buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate.

School spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo said the New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a district-wide school wellness policy.

Michael's suspension was reduced from three days to one, but he has not been reinstated as class vice president.

Michael says he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules, but he did notice the student selling the Skittles was being secretive.

When I went to school the nuns would surely lay that ruler on our hands for breaking the rules, but they always had a candy stash for when we did good things.... my problem with this is Michael obviously had a good head on his shoulders because he was class vice president... Skittles vs. vice president of class? Punishment was a bit overboard for sensible people

    Bullshit.

Everyone just wants POWER! And if having power means banning candy at school that's what power means!

That is such CRAP! Things like that make me sooo glad I am homeschooled and have good parents who don't CONTROL me, but HELP me.

    forced wellness?
I thought the Presidential Fitness Award was a self-confidence downer, and I was thin, flexible and fit, just couldn't run a mile or do a pull up.
If I didn't eat candy at school, I'd have never had any. Look at me now, I'm 300 lbs and have to be airlifted to the grocery store so I can buy more candy.

Uhm...that's really harsh. Strip him of all honors because he bought a bag of candy. If their school is so worried about that, imagine the worse things that are happening that they're missing.
I hate how honors students get caught more than the kids that cause the REAL problems.

I can see where the School is coming from. What if them skittles
were laced with a drug?????? I do think some kind of punishment
is in order but not any days off., or stripped of anything The person selling
    should have been suspended.

Whether he knew of the rule or not, and being class vice president he should have known about it, he did violate the rule and should suffer the consequences. As should anyone who violates the same rule -- honors student or not! The consequences, however, seem to be a tad on the overboard side, considering not many students could be removed from office or banned from a dinner (which is the only fitting consequence for the "crime"!)...

I thought this was stupid. It seems like the teachers there are more worried about kids eating healthy then their education.
But today I read they have dropped the suspension and let him be vp again.
