Should homework be banned?

Homework is a task set by teachers for students to do outside normal lessons
– usually at home in the evening. Until the past few decades
usually only older students had to do it. More recently younger students
have also been given homework by their primary or elementary schools.
In England the government does not make schools give homework but it
does set guidelines - 5 year olds are expected to do an hour a week,
increasing to 3 hours a week at 11 and 10 hours or more a week at
16.
I know many parents who stay up to midnight with their kids doing mountains of homework. Several women I work with have their kids attending Christian schools - and the amount of homework is monumental. My kids went to private schools. I hesitate to call it a "Scientology" school, because that wasn't taught there. These were accredited private schools and the kids learned academic topics as in any school, but the way they were taught was different. These were college prep schools, as well. But it was the philosophy of the school that homework NOT be given to allow for more family time. The schools, however, were year round (Although during summer they studied in the morning and went on field trips in the afternoons).
Do you believe that homework should be banned entirely?

A child should have a well-rounded life - consisting of extra-curricular activities, socializing with friends, family-time, etc. If they are bombarded with homework, this turns them off to school and doesn't enable them to have a well-rounded life.
Teachers have so many days off now because of budget cuts, that they send the work home and expect the parents to teach the kids.
