Should Happy Meals Be Healthy?

If you were a kid in America during the last 30 years, you probably have very happy memories of tearing into a McDonald's Happy Meal, not only for the toy inside but for the burger, soda and fries.

Starting next month, San Francisco children will have a different experience.

San Francisco on Tuesday became the first major U.S. city to pass a law cracking down on giving kids free toys with unhealthy restaurant meals, Reuters reported.

The law, like an ordinance passed earlier this year in Santa Clara County, will require that restaurant kiddie meals meet certain nutritional standards before they can be sold with toys. Toys may be given away with kids' meals that have less than 600 calories, contain fruits and vegetables, and include beverages without excessive fat or sugar.

Other than your 8-year-old, guess who else has a problem with this law?

"We are extremely disappointed with today's decision. It's not what our customers want, nor is it something they asked for," McDonald's spokeswoman Danya Proud said in a statement. "Getting a toy with a kid's meal is just one part of a fun, family experience at McDonald's."

But others say the new law will make children healthier (and thereby happier).

"Our children are sick. Rates of obesity in San Francisco are disturbingly high, especially among children of color," San Francisco Supervisor Eric Mar, who sponsored the measure, told the AP.

"This is a challenge to the restaurant industry to think about children's health first and join the wide range of local restaurants that have already made this commitment," Mar said.

We think a healthier version of a Happy Meal that contains a fruit or veggie instead of soda might be the best happy medium. And after a while, kids won't know what they're missing.

    Let me put this simply.

If you don't know why you and/or your kids are fat you are a moron.

If you blame someone else for you and/or your kids being fat then you are a spineless moron.

If you think the government needs to intrude into everyone else personal lives or that you deserve compensation because you and/or your kids are fat then you are a totalitarian, spineless moron.

If you and your kids are skinny but you still think it's the governments responsibility to dictate to everyone else what they can and can not eat then you are just a pompous totalitarian... but more than likely you're a moron too.

There's a concept called responsibility and it has a direct relationship with liberty. You cannot have one without the other. Eliminate responsibility and you eliminate freedom.

We should be ferociously defensive whenever anyone proposes laws for the government to relieve us from our responsibilities and allow it only after very serious consideration. If you desire merely to be protected from every risk and responsibility in life then go back to kindergarten because you are a child.

Let's just consider the source... San Francisco! That alone should say enough... However let's just extrapolate for a moment. If the citizens of SF want to ban toys with burgers and fries, no veggies because it MAY be harmful to children, then when will this happen in that city:

    1) They'll pass a law banning wood screws being sold in hardware stores because they have pointy ends and you may get injured.
    2) They'll pass a law requiring you to put on one of those suma wrestler suits before getting into your car so you can just bounce around if you get in an accident. Or better yet, they'll just ban private vechicles and all public transportation and make you walk everywhere - that would be healthy.
    3) Now for the hot water heater law. No hot water heater sold in SF may be set to any temperature above 90 degrees. You might scald yourself otherwise. And gosh knows that would save energy too!
    4) yada, yada, yada... you get the picture...

Nope, I hope all those fast food companies file a lawsuit challenging this law. They are selling a legal product and the consumer does not have to buy it.

The government - contrary to the beliefs of SF citizens - does not have all the answers and solutions.

Ugh. You don't order the food and then sue the cook for preparing it for you.

    Oh wait...this is America...

Seriously people, if people are buying Happy Meals over the healthier items you are just going to piss them off by changing the Happy Meal.

This is another result of parents buying too much unhealthy food and then shrugging their shoulders and shaking their heads in confusion over their fat kid.

The options are already there. Maybe add a "Healthy Happy Meal" to the menu alongside the Happy Meal if it makes you feel better.

As for the parents who can't figure out why their kids are fat...

    Wake the f*ck up!

No parents should take the responsibility to do their jobs and feed their kids healthy food not expect the govt to regulate what a private business decides to put in a happy meal.

If you eat outside of your home (whether it be McDonald's or any restaurant for that matter), you do not know who/what has touched your food, how it was handled, ingredients used, origin of those ingredients, etc.

If health is of a concern, then prepare healthy meals at home. Use local ingredients. Avoid purchasing pesticide-ridden food, or anything highly processed, for starters.

No matter how healthy any restaurant claims to be, you simply do not know what goes on behind the scenes. :)

pesticide-ridden food highly processed starters healthy restaurant claims simply scenes

This basically means that McDonald's will just start selling the toys separately. It won't do anything. There is a serious discussion about freedom versus public health, but the compromise on that debate won't be settled by this law.

for the love of... well i wouldnt eat that crap if my life depended on it. but to be fair no one goes to mcD to get something healthy if you want your kids to be healthy give them a carrot or better yet do what my parents did leave them in a garden filled with fruits for an hour and a half(bear in mind that this might make them as close to addicted to fruits as you can get) or tell them that broccolis are small trees so that they can pretend that they are godzilla

Theres no point in taking out the toy for a specific meal, they are just being petty.

Actually they are healthy (better options for the happy meals), people just don't take the time to look.
A regular happy meal used to be:
*a choice of a plain or cheese Burger/nuggets
    *fries
    *soda

They added other options to the regular happy meal which are:
    * a choice of a plain or cheese Burger/nuggets
    * a choice of fries or apples
*a choice of soda, low fat milk, or apple juice
......................I think McDonald's did their job by offering healthier choices. Some parents play dumb and act as if those options don't exist. Then they wonder why their kids are fat. So if their kid gets fat it's not McDonald's fault, but the parents. Government needs to stay out of it as well.

    Enough said.

a happy meal shouldn't be anything. it is just a product, nobody forces you to buy it, if you don't like it, don't buy it.

if your kids or yourself are fat, well, just do some exercise (or smoke some w**d) (or even better, do both :) )

if you have a better idea (a healthy and tasty meal) get a loan, start your own business and get rich and evil.

This sounds like a very good idea. I quite like this piece of legislature.

And don't forget people: they're NOT REMOVING UNHEALTHY FOOD FROM THE MENU. They're just changing what foods get you a toy, that's all. Kids can still eat their greasy food.

A very positive way of promoting healthier eating at a young age. Obesity is a huge problem in this country followed by many adults and children that benefit from federal and state healthcare... It's about time that the State stepped in and helped the problem!!

Yes that's the answer more federal spending and regulating. (eyes rolling) Spending more money that WE DON"T HAVE is never the answer. You can't throw money at something and hope it disappears. We have learned through many Government programs that doesn't work eg. teen pregnancy and anti drug programs. They just need to keep there fat noses out of peoples personal business.

Sez you. I like a green salad. And I liked vegetables as a kid, too. They can be just as delicious as french fries. It's all about what your parents feed you as a kid. My parents fed me all kinds of foods as a kid, so in terms of tastes, I'm rather eclectic.
