Should Happy Hour Be Banned?

New Yorkers have a new reason to shed a tear in their beer: happy hour may soon be banned in the city, a Department of Health source told The New York Post. "It’s absolutely been discussed," the source said, referring to a proposal on the table to ban discounted drinks at bars and restaurants.

happy hour

Agency spokesman Sam Miller denied existing "plans to pursue any policy around discount-alcohol sale," according to the Post, but in his "Take Care New York 2012" report, Commissioner Thomas Farley said he aimed to "reduce risky alcohol use." The document reads: "DOH will advocate for policies that reduce access to alcohol by adolescents and for limits on sales practices in communities and campuses that promote drinking among adolescents and heavy drinking among adults."

In fact, if this plans goes through, New York City wouldn't be alone: 19 states currently prohibit happy hour. But we're definitely not the only ones who appreciate a discounted beverage after work... are we? What do you think about the potential happy hour ban in New York?

Damn it! This is what I HATE about the "government!" STOP trying to regulate our lives and behavior!

It's is up to the individual to regulate him- or herself, the bartender can also help regulate, and then society already has a mechanism--laws on the books--to punish those who are unable to do so, but LEAVE THE GOVERNMENT OUT OF OUR DAILY LIVES.

Didn't these geniuses try this in the 20's? All this will do is hurt local businesses. If people want to drink they'll drink.

Why do government officials have to butt into everything? It is a Happy Hour! The bars should just call it something else, and still do it. Let's give them a new Hour to celebrate! How about "TGIM! for Thank Goodness it's Monday hour, and then TGIT for Tuesday, and on and on! The government would be busy as heck trying to ban each day's celebratory hour. TGIF

Forget all the other arguments pro or con. What gives US governing bodies the right to regulate retail prices? Companies are taken to court for price fixing. If a government won't allow a business to put their products on sale, which is basically what happy hour is, then the government is price fixing. About the only difference between many US governing bodies and criminal syndicates is the governments can't be charged under RICO.

This is so incredibly stupid! And 19 states already do it?

Give me a break! Happy Hour is NOT a bad thing. If you lack control, taking away happy hour isn't going to change that.

Back off, and re-allow happy hour in this 19 states!

Thank you. Government has no right to tell you what to do behind closed doors. Read bill of rights to confirm. Anyways, New York can eat it. Never wanted to go in the first place, now, I really don't wanna go considering a draft beer is around $9. F that..Ash: Kung Fu for a good song about Jackie Chan.

And if it is legal to buy it and drink it.....how far should those regulations go? I'm suggesting that someone with a legit business has a perfect right to market their business! They are already liable if they serve an individual to much!
