Should Happy Hour Be Banned?

New Yorkers have a new reason to shed a tear in their beer: happy hour may soon be banned in the city, a Department of Health source told The New York Post. "It’s absolutely been discussed," the source said, referring to a proposal on the table to ban discounted drinks at bars and restaurants.

happy hour

Agency spokesman Sam Miller denied existing "plans to pursue any policy around discount-alcohol sale," according to the Post, but in his "Take Care New York 2012" report, Commissioner Thomas Farley said he aimed to "reduce risky alcohol use." The document reads: "DOH will advocate for policies that reduce access to alcohol by adolescents and for limits on sales practices in communities and campuses that promote drinking among adolescents and heavy drinking among adults."

In fact, if this plans goes through, New York City wouldn't be alone: 19 states currently prohibit happy hour. But we're definitely not the only ones who appreciate a discounted beverage after work... are we? What do you think about the potential happy hour ban in New York?

Damn it! This is what I HATE about the "government!" STOP trying to regulate our lives and behavior!

It's is up to the individual to regulate him- or herself, the bartender can also help regulate, and then society already has a mechanism--laws on the books--to punish those who are unable to do so, but LEAVE THE GOVERNMENT OUT OF OUR DAILY LIVES.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

    Dear government,

Please stay the F**k out of our personal lives. We are fully capable of making our own decisions.

    Thank you.

I didn't need a nanny as a child, I certainly don't need one now. If you have problem drinkers aim your programs at them, not everybody. You don't use a scimitar to do knee surgery.

1 more step on the road to "the criminalization of everything". Soon we will be told whether we must wipe our own asses from front to back or back to front, or if we must fold or bunch the toilet-paper. New "Potty Police" will be hired to enforce the law.

"Reduce alcohol access to adolescents"? It,s already illegal to serve alcohol to people under 21. New York must be one miserable place to try to party in these days.

It's nobody but your own and if you're a minor your parent's job to protect you from yourself. The government should stop interfering with our own choices.

Wow, in NYC. No surprise there. What hasn't Bloomturd banned. He's a little commie dictator that ran as a republican to fool everybody. Next he'll dictate how many pieces of corn you can have in your crap, and probably tax your for them.

Whether they hide behind an R or a D they are authoritarian, statist. Whether you consider them a communist or a fascist, it's apples to apples. The are the opposite and an enemy of freedom and our founding principals.

Totally asinine, once again! Why does the government (at whatever level) think they have the right to tell a business how to run?? Yeah, I know.. look at the way they run the car industry and all. But I'm so sick of it all! If a bar wants to offer free peanuts and discounted drinks in order to help it's business, so what? I guess next the government will make it illegal for any store to hold sales because it causes stampedes or something! I'm not a drinker, but it's just another claw the government digs in with! Ridiculous!

No, but I'd support replacing Happy Hour with Happy Season... in fact four of them per year would be just dandy. If NYC's nanny state is against it, it must be a good thing.

This is how business get more people through the door. This is usually during their normally slow times. It boosts their sales. Is this going to be like prohibition??

Alcoholic beverage prices aren't too bad. I used to "wait" for happy hour when I was young, dumb and full of *** to save money, but the whole thing is really for people who like to get hammered. How about a combo meal instead, free beer or glass of wine with a food order; good enough for me!

ha... maybe you haven't bought a beer in NYC lately. When I lived there in the late ’90s, it was already $6 per bottle. Last time I visited, it wasn't hard to find bars charging $9 or $10. Buying a round could cost $40-$50. But as noted, it wouldn't matter if drinks were normally just a $1. Regulatory over-reach is the issue.
