Should Gyms Ban Skinny People?

Did you ever notice that most gyms are filled with skinny people? So did Wendy McNary, an overweight woman in her early fifties who felt too out of place to join a fitness club. Until she discovered Body Exchange. You see, Body Exchange, in North Vancouver, Canada, admits only plus-size women.

plus size gym

For Wendy McNary, Body Exchange was exactly the kind of environment she was looking for. “It’s intimidating going into a gym setting,” she told The Province. “I honestly think some people in a gym setting are judgmental to people who are overweight or have a different body type.”

Now, she exercises six days a week, is training for her second 5K race and is down 50 pounds. But does it make sense to ban fit people from the gym? Louise Green, founder and CEO of Body Exchange, thinks it does. “Many of our clients have not had successful fitness pasts so I can see the anxiety before we get started and I can see the relief and happiness after we finish,” Green told The Province. “People are often too fearful to become active. There wasn’t a model that offered camaraderie.”

But we have to wonder: Do they throw you out once you slim down? How do they decide who is too skinny to join? And wouldn’t a gym that’s only for thin people offend everybody? Hmm…

what if the skinny people want to bulk up. It's a freaking gymnasium, not a weight loss center.

Lol...I'm overweight & by no means intimidated or embarrassed to go to the gym with skinny people! I do however feel bad about buying crap at the supermarket (even though it's rarely for me to eat)...it's like you read my mind!

I can see the value in having some gyms for different weight groups, but banning skinny people from gyms altogether would be stupid. Can't I want to put on some muscles, or work to stay skinny and healthy?

Skinny people have as much of a right to be there as people who are heavier and guess what? The skinny people also think that they have flaws with their body (why else would they be there?) or they're just keeping themselves toned. Personally, at the gym I'm far too concerned with what I'm doing to really care about who else is working out. Either that or I'm too into the music I'm listening to. lol

No Gym's shouldn't ban skinny people.

    That said.
This is NOT A GYM. This is a fitness club. This is a private business that caters to overweight women that want to feel comfortable in an exercise setting and not feel self-conscious about their size..

No, it is not the business of gyms to play mom or dad. Gyms should also not be responsible for fat people having heart attacks while at their gyms.

No but I can kind of see where it's coming from. i go to the gym and find that sometimes I feel worse being there. There are some heavy people that go to my gym and I’m not going to lie, seeing them makes me feel better about myself but you do have the person who's there and looks perfect and it leaves you thinking "Why are you even here?" which balances out me feeling good for one second lol. Everyone has issues about themselves regardless if you can see them or not. I don’t know what those other girls are thinking. They may feel as bad as me

You can be skinny and out of shape. People go to the gym to exercise and everybody needs exercise.

Edit- I obviously meant "no" not "yes"

I joined a gym when I was overweight, yes there are some judgmental people, but everywhere you go there are going to be those kinds. Seriously, I didn't care what people thought, I was there to lose weight, not to be pretty. Its fine that they have a gym like that for bigger people, but it is true how if they made a gym for all skinny people then a lot of bigger people will get mad. Do these people honestly think that all skinny people in the gym is just there to judge, they are just there to exercise and get more fit.

Teddy Roosevelt, 26th President of America, was a very skinny, sick, frail young boy - the doctors and health experts felt he would not live past his teens. His Dad built a gym of sorts for him to strengthen him, plus the young Roosevelt combined that with long walks, hikes, and horseback rides. It led the "New York City born" Roosevelt to go out west to explore places like Iowa, Nebraska, and the Dakotas - that's one reason why many things in those states like schools and monuments are named after him, and why one of the four heads carved out of Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota is carved to look like his.

Skinny people should not be banned from gyms. The gym his Dad built is one of the reasons why Teddy Roosevelt survived and thrived, and lived to become the 26th President of the United States. You never know which "seemingly unhealthy person" who walks into a gym, will become the next great influential person of our time.

Obviously not in general, but I suppose I don't care if a particular gym wants to only admit "plus size" women. Interesting thought though, when you lose enough weight, do they say you can't go there any more?

Yeah, I wonder about that. Most people I see at the gym are so totally self-absorbed that they'd never notice who was fat, thin, green, purple, or wearing a lime popsicle around their neck. I'm neither fat not skinny, but I'm old, and I feel invisible. But in a good way.

if they feel that skinny peopel shouldn't go to the same gym as them then they shoud just start making some gyms for strictly skinny people and some for only fat people. but wit a minute, then they will complainabout the gyms being segregated by body size and complain and say, "well why can't we go to the same gym as the skinny people. are we not good enough cause were bigger than they are?" it don't make sence to me for gyms for only bigger people and some for only fit people. so just keep them how they are, anyone can go to any gym.

lol. its what it reminds me of, segregation for one stupid reason or another, dumb white people from before wanted people seperated by race which was a stupid ass idea and now fat people want segregated gyms. its just as dumb an idea as racial segregation. so i used it as a comparison. i intended for people to notice the similarities so they see its a dumb idea to make fat only and skinny only gyms.

When you hit a healthy BMI should your plus sized gym kick you out? Or are they going to try and keep you from getting fit so that they have your business for longer? Sounds stupid to me from a business stand point... People judge everyone for everything these days- get used to it

    "should gyms ban skinny people"

reading the title makes me say "wtf, no". Until I read the paragraph, a lot of people in the gym are judgemental. They should make a plus size gym.. If they make a plus size gym... does that harm anybody? It doesnt. it would just make the plus size women feel better about themselves to work about more and longer. It helps solve with their weight problem, then go ahead!

People in life are judgmental...so only at the gym people are like that???..people don't judge when their eating fast food when they shouldn't be?? or when their buying coke & alot of other bad food from the grocery store no one judges them...please they need to get it together & workout...

You obviously dont understand, I dare you to get into a 300 pound fat suit and walk into a regular gym. Cmon, video tape it. Show me how "comfortable" you are. "people in life are judgemental" that doesnt mean you have to force yourself to be some where you dont like. So guess what? They dont go exercising and gain more weight. If it makes them more comfortable, being around people their own size, and they are going to lose weight and actually live healtheir and longer. I say go ahead.

Don't have to force themselves to be somewhere they don't want to be??..umm that's life they don't have a problem going to mcdonalds & where ever else to stuff their faces then they should have no problem working out with the "skinny people"...they shouldn't have gotten that big in the first place if their uncomfortable to workout in a public gym...

I think the problem is the way the question is phrased. It should say something like "Are plus size only gyms a good idea?" the way they ask it, it makes it sound like they are talking about all gyms.
