Wesloco 2012/07/29 20:18:55
Yes it should be the official language and all government materials should be in English
Yes it should be the official language but government materials could be printed in other languages
English is already the nation's language so why do we need to pass a law?
No we should have two official languages and the other should be ....

If I was to move to France, I had better learn French, or get a really good translation book. They will not cater to me and my desire to not have to learn a new language. It is that way in many countries. Why do we need to be all inclusive, thus making it so that people can be in this country legally for years and never have to learn English?

I think English has pretty much supplanted French in diplomatic language as well.
But then, most of these "multi-lingual" countries speak English as a second language. Why do you think that is?

If making English the official language means banning all other languages, I can't support it. That would be against the 1st amendment. If it's just making all gvt. forms English, then no problem.

its not unconstitution if they add an amendment or law under health or saftey.
English is an official language of at least 50 countries. None of ... U.S. Englishsays that official English promotes unity, empowers ... As long as people are willing to respect the laws of the land, I don't see a problem with this.
English is the de facto language since, at this point, it is the most widely spoken language in the nation. But Spanish is catching up with over forty million Hispanics speaking their native language at home, at work, and on their daily lives

After the Spanish-American War, English was declared "the official language of the school ... should be required to make English its primary language as a condition of statehood. ... Arizona

Languages are protected by the 1st amendment. You can NOT ban them without another amendment. And I said that I do think English should be the official language. I also said that banning all other languages from being spoken or taught would be wrong.

where in the first amendment does it say laugauge? i dont remember reading that in one of my constituiton classes freedom of speech and laugauge ar not the same thing.
now show me once again where that is. better read what the supreme court has said and know you constitution before you speak.

The amendment prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances.

Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and by many state constitutions and state and federal laws. The freedom is not absolute; the Supreme Court of the United States has recognized several categories of speech that are excluded from the freedom of speech, and it has recognized that governments may enact reasonable time, place, or manner restrictions on speech.

Criticism of the government and advocacy of unpopular ideas that people may find distasteful or against public policy are almost always permitted. There are exceptions to these general protections, including the Miller test for obscenity, child pornography laws, speech that incites imminent lawless action, and regulation of commercial speech such as advertising. Within these limited areas, other limitations on free speech balance rights to free speech and other rights, such as rights for authors and inventors over their works and discoveries (copyright and patent), protection from imminent or potential violence against particular persons (restrictions on fighting words), or the use of untruths to harm others (slander). Distinctions are often made between speech and other acts which may have symbolic significance.

Despite the exceptions, the legal protections of the First Amendment are some of the broadest of any industrialized nation, and remain a critical, and occasionally controversial, component of American jurisprudence.

Having an official language does NOT promote unity at all. It create disharmony and alienations of other ethnic groups which are already a major part of the country.

To do it now would cause an enormous amount to distress in the country and create a huge amount of racial tension.

Apparently you do not know what 'de faco' means. I DO KNOW MY STUFF!

Quite frankly I would quite copy and pasting from sites that are old and unreliable. You have done very poorly at this very simple job.

Just because countries have an official language does not mean that is the only languages that countries uses either. Most countries are multi-lingual.

The facts are that the majority of all of these countries is that they have several languages that are used on a daily basis and they get alone comfortable with that system.

Every country on the planet id dealing with multiple languages, American is the only country that is trying to make a massive deal about it and thinks they are better than every other person on the planet. Just where exactly do you think the people came from you explored you country in the first place. They certainly were not born there!

Canada has TWO official languages. FRENCH and ENGLISH.
Ethiopia official languages: Amharic, English, Tigrigna.
Eritrea has NO offical language, though Tigrinya, Arabic and English predominate in commerce and national business
Oceania- French and English are official in virtually all the states of Oceania.
Tokelau official languages are English and Tokelauan.
Vanuatu -The official languages are Bislama, English and French.

The point is that most of these countries only speak English as a seconary language and they use their ethnic languages as their first language for their daily living. The government and business community will use English to conduct business with with other countries becuase they have no other choice.

What business is it of yours how old anyone is....the fact is that I have lived a very long time and have lived in 3 different countries including the USA and have a very good education.

I think both English and Spanish should be our official languages, and we should pass a guideline requiring all aspiring immigrants to speak at least one of those fluently.
