It's dependent on a lot of things, primarily whether one partner is a spend thrift or not. My late husband and I merged our finances in my checking account when we married. I wrote him a check every week for expenses. Before we married he didn't even keep a check register. He put money in his personal account when the Bank told him it was empty. I, on the other hand, have to know where every penny I have is all the time.
personally, its up to the couple. but i dont want to end up like my parents, cant stand each other, my mom doesnt have a job, and no way out.
i cant wait till i can get a job and open a bank account that my parents dont have access to, because im tired of them taking my money.
I'm personally against it, I know allot of guys that have worked in camp jobs making insane amounts of money, and they came back to find their wives and girlfriends have already spent it.
I am a fan of separate banking, credit cards, and having it so any transfer of funds has to go through the person the account belongs to.
