Should children who wet their beds be punished?

Dave The Canuck 2012/07/08 18:31:51
Yes, punish that dirty, bedwetting child!
No, punishing the child is wrong and counterproductive.

I don't see why a child should be punished for something that's clearly an accident. But in magazines I've read at the doctor's office, some parents punish their children for wetting the bed anyway.

Years ago I had that problem up until I was about 7. My mother kept blaming me for it. It was my grandmother who asked her if it ever occurred to her that I might have a MEDICAL PROBLEM. Turns out I did. After surgery I never wet the bed again. Parents need to rule out any other causes first before they get all stupid about their kids wetting the bed.

If the kid's already got bedwetting down, I'd say to stay away from adding to the shame and trauma of it.

A nice reward for a dry bed in the morning is highly effective. The carrot is better than the stick.

Attention should be given to understand what is causing the problem. However, do not punish or shame the child. This is a correctable issue.

Sort of scares me that anyone would say "yes." Apparently, the research into bed-wetting hasn't been as thoroughly distributed as one would prefer.

It is simply a matter of an immature system in many cases. Sometimes it could be a medical problem that needs to be addressed.

It's the parent(s) responsibility to make the necessary arrangement for the kid (s) or to the bed to avoid pee damages.

Punish them? GAWD you people have no frigging compassion do ya? I hope there is a special place in Hell for folks that molest and/or punish children for stuff they have little to no control over.

No. Bedwetting in children who have been potty trained can be a sign of neglect or abuse or even a psychological or medical problem. No matter how you stack it, it's probably not the kids fault. My brother was 11 yrs old and wetting the bed. Mom took him to the dr who recommended that he have his adenoids removed and once he did, no more bedwetting. The adenoids were so large that they vibrated when he slept making it difficult for him to reach sleep cycles when he was supposed to so by the time early morning came around, he was so tired from not hitting a restful sleep earlier in the night that he would sleep through the signal to urinate and end up wetting the bed.

I believe the best way to handle that is to limit the amount of water or other drinks they consume before bed time. Then if it persists get them a physical and see if there is a medical reason for this, like a kidney infection, etc. and if that doesn't help find out if there is a psychological reason. Once the reason for the bed wetting is discovered then fix the problem. Punishment for that only creates more problems.

This would be a Hugh mistake. No child wet's their bed just to spite their parents unless the parents are mean to them. There are many ways to work through that problem that does not include punishing your child for something they could not help.

more times than not bed wetting is from a totally separate issue than what it seems to be such as
    stress
    over active bladder
    under developed bladder
    or some type of abuse

It will only make a sensitive issue much worse. The kid will already feel bad enough about it.

IMHO punishment is not the way to help raise an adult. This is not to say there are no consequences for actions/behaviors that are inappropriate.

Of course not. It isn't even a big deal. A lot of children wet the bed and most grow out of it. There are also plenty of healthy strategies these days that can help teach a child not to wet the bed.

It's a difficult one. My fiancee's daughter was wetting the bed every night, just because she was too lazy to go to the toilet. We let it go for a while, but we had to punish her in the end.

Naw, she isn't lazy. Did you ever stop and think about how she really feels about you and her mommy playing house ? Each child reacts differently. You need to have some one on one time with her and ask why ? Punishment is the wrong answer.
    Have a good one !
