In the post 9/11 world cell phones have become a need not a luxury. I ama teacher and I understand the distractions cell phones can cause but I also understand the distractions computers cause and we force kids to have them. Frankly as both a teacher and a parent I say YES to cell phones. The big possitive as a teacher is that the kids don't have to ask me to go the office to make a call.

With the advances in technology, teachers are being called on to become more creative in their approach to teaching and learning. The use of the internet in research and learning is evidently an important aspect of education in our time. Therefore, it is not the bringing of phones to school that should be monitored rather, it is the manner in which phones are used that should be clamped down on. Besides, what is the purpose of education if not to aid students to become fully functional in the global world. This is the world that they have to go out to - why not teach and guide them on the proper use of things instead of shutting it out altogether.

You don't need your cell phone at school for anything really. If you need to call for whatever reason, use the phone in the main office, problem solved.

Students are in school to learn, not text or talk to friends...if they need to use a phone, there is one in the office they can use for emergencies

Families need instant contact for emergencies. Restricting use is sufficient.
As a side note. In college, the note takers photograph the blackboard with their phones, and the photos are in the disabled students notes.

I almost voted to "turn it off in class", but we all know that won't work. There will always be those who won't. Unless everybody puts them on a separate desk in the room. I see it all the time when I fly somewhere; there are so many passengers who just won't obey the flight attendant's instructions to shut down all electronic devices. It's mostly the younger crowd who will ignore the instructions. We have become addicted to round the clock texting or calling......

Hence I say ban them. I have a much better idea; use the cell signal jammers they have in Britain. These devices can be placed around the building and they will block cellular signals. They are not that expensive. We must turn our learning institutions back to the basics.................LEARNI...

Have we forgotten the days before cellphones? Or the days when a shoebox sized phone cost about 3000 dollars? And airtime.......fahgeddaboudit!!!

It's one more thing that hinders learning. If a student needs to be reached at school, the call can be made to the office and a message taken.

Like what? 9/11 or Columbine; like somebody mentioned?

What are the odds of that versus the distractions in our learning environment. Our educational system is bad enough and you want to add this distraction?

Hospitals, schools and theaters should use cell signal blocking devices.

Improving our education can be achieved by firing bad teachers who let kids play with their cell phones in class...but the government won't do that, they like their "tenure" policy too much.

Here we go again. Spoiled brats that think they need every electronic gadget that comes along and of course the idiotic parents that allow their children to rule over them. WHY DO CHILDREN NEED CELL PHONES???? Those of us born way before cell phones came along survived without a whole lot of things that the brats nowadays think they need or they can't live without them. Such a brainwashed society, what do you expect.

Making a universal law, may lead to problems, especially when you are dealing with crazies bring violence to school grounds.

Just have them turn the phone off during class times. Teach them some boundaries and etiquette.

There is a lot more things that happens now that didn't in the past. Before I was against having cell phones in school. But now that I've seen how crazy people are getting, I'm ok with kids having cell phones in school. May be their only means of asking for help in a bad situation.

Cell phones are a way of life for alot of people now......why ban them from schools? be respectful and put the ringtone on vibrate. Schools are understaffed during a national emergency such as 9/11/2001 to be able to relay messages to students. People dont want to have to be "reactionaries" better to have a peace of mind with communication.

this should have been my answer: " How about just turning it off during class? ".
Sometimes when our class was suspended due to heavy rain, the school would require us, students, to have a parent to fetch them, and my problem is they never know.

If an emergency happens the parents would need to get in touch with the kids to tell them what is going on or if they are going to be picked up early. They don't have to call they can text but that phone still needs to be their encase something happens.

So banning during school hours is the only way, not that the kids wouldn't still get away with it.

When kids text in class they are not paying attention to their lesson for the day. Teachers need that respect and undivided attention. No cell phones in class.

We are living in a tough economic times where some/most of us are unemploy and the job that we do have we have to fight to keep it because at any given minute it could be taken away. Cell phone is a good thing to us,but on the other hand if you abuse it that could cause health effect. I am all for cell phone, but not in the class room that could be a distraction if anything should happen in a time of emergency, we need it to contact law enforcement and our love once. KEEP CELLPHONE OUT OF THE CLASSROOM.

Just turn them off. I bring my cell phone to school but I keep it turned off in my backpack. Most people keep it on silent in their pocket so that they can take it out during class to text, play games, or go on the Internet. Cell phones are fine as long as they're off and put away when you don't need them for something important.

As a substitute teacher in the past....kids don't listen and more often than not...try to get away with it. There are many distractions as school and cell phones are one, the other is how our children dress, bullying, bad teachers, too many snow days off, and the biggest is too many hateful, mean spirited, I don't have to listen to you, dysfunctional troubled kids in the classrooms. It was eye opening how many kids get away with what ever behavior they bring to school. When i asked students who were causing trouble to leave, the response from many of the kids afterwards in the class were high fives and clapping and thanking me for doing what I had done. Most kids want to learn.

Or turning them into silent mode? You have no right to take our phones. There was a case in Portugal that a teacher took a girl's phone so the girl completely lost her mind and tried to force the teacher to give her phone back. Her friends and classmates just stared at them, some of them were laughing, i probably would've stared too but i woulnd't laugh about it. They taped it and put it on Youtube, i don't know if it's still online. It was at my old school. If you could research about schools in Portugal, you would that there are a lot of fights in high schools, really ugly ones.
