Should Bathing Suits Be Banned on the Boardwalk?

The beach, the boardwalk ... they're pretty much the same thing, right? Not in Asbury Park, N.J. Technically, you're not allowed to wear a bathing suit once you step off the beach in the Jersey shore city -- and the chairwoman of the local Republican party wants to enforce that rule, to keep things "classy." Classy on the Jersey shore? (We kid.)

boardwalk

"I understand that social things have changed," said 74-year-old Louise Murray, a city councilwoman from 1997-2001, who's been noticing suits at the boardwalk’s bars and restaurants, The Star-Ledger reports. "But forget that. Just put a shirt on."

The ordinance is believed to be more than 40 years old, and Asbury Park is considered more "high-end" than other Jersey Shore towns. But others are mixed on enforcing the rule.

"How do you satisfy everybody?" Deputy Mayor John Loffredo told The Star-Ledger. "I don’t think it’s appropriate to just wear a bathing suit at a bar. But it’s up to the business. If they allow it, they allow it." He continued, "We don’t have the resources to enforce it. We’re not going to have cops on the boardwalk enforcing that. It’s not going to happen." Do you think bathing suits should be banned on the boardwalk?

This is most likely a way to generate business for private bath houses. Many shore towns already have bans against changing clothes in public restrooms for the same reason. It is a racket, and she is most likely paying someone back for donating to her political campaign.

I bet it would really piss them off if you changed between the boardwalk & the beach. You know strip & change right on the steps.

The bathrooms that are located on the beach or go home. I shouldn't have to suffer for your convenience.

Do you know many beaches on the shore ban changing clothes in rest rooms? They do it to generate business for the private bath houses.

I don't think it's the classiest move to walk around or go to a bar in your bikini .Yet I see nothing wrong with the girl in the pic she has shorts on.The guy in back however really put a shirt on mister nobody wants to see that.I think people confuse being at a resort when it's acceptable to being in a town.

I grew up going to the Jersey Shore. That may be an old law on the books, but the individual shops used to have signs up if they wanted it enforced.

no shirt no shoes no service

I've lived all over, and I've seen (and adhered to) those signs, as they make sense; its rather unhygienic to be barefoot and/or bare-chested in a public place of business.

However, I've never seen "No bathing suits" signs.

As long as the feet, nips, and pubes are covered I dont see what the big deal is.

If someone is so very offended by mere exposed skin, they can always look away....

I actual have seen signs for no swim suits. I think it was more for not having wet suits on and sitting on cloth covered seats. But the point is, that it should be up to the place of business to make and enforce their prefered rules. Not the Asbury Park Police.

There, I totally agree; whether I see the point or not, policies like that should be up to the individual merchants.

Why bring politics into this? There are conservatives on both sides. Plus political don't make who you are, she just obviously thought people can dress more presentable when hanging out on the boardwalk. She came from a different time, whatever happened to "respect your elders"?
