Should Bathing Suits Be Banned on the Boardwalk?

The beach, the boardwalk ... they're pretty much the same thing, right? Not in Asbury Park, N.J. Technically, you're not allowed to wear a bathing suit once you step off the beach in the Jersey shore city -- and the chairwoman of the local Republican party wants to enforce that rule, to keep things "classy." Classy on the Jersey shore? (We kid.)

boardwalk

"I understand that social things have changed," said 74-year-old Louise Murray, a city councilwoman from 1997-2001, who's been noticing suits at the boardwalk’s bars and restaurants, The Star-Ledger reports. "But forget that. Just put a shirt on."

The ordinance is believed to be more than 40 years old, and Asbury Park is considered more "high-end" than other Jersey Shore towns. But others are mixed on enforcing the rule.

"How do you satisfy everybody?" Deputy Mayor John Loffredo told The Star-Ledger. "I don’t think it’s appropriate to just wear a bathing suit at a bar. But it’s up to the business. If they allow it, they allow it." He continued, "We don’t have the resources to enforce it. We’re not going to have cops on the boardwalk enforcing that. It’s not going to happen." Do you think bathing suits should be banned on the boardwalk?

The cola thing. But all over this nation governments - local, statewide and federal, they are trying to take away any freedom, right or privilidge Americans have had for centuries. Of course, it is their "public schools" that are putting out students too stupid to know what is right and wrong or good and bad. So the gov't feels like the must make the decision for such stupid people.

If people were smarter about their choices the government wouldnt have to tell you what to do... obesity and related illnesses such as diabetes are putting a strain on the healthcare system...and guess who steps in to sort it out....big brother. So make better choices and get rid of big government - and I think you should be made to wear this at bars

While I possess enough intelligence not to subject passersby to the unsightly view that would be me shirtless and in a bathing suit, other people don't. However, venturing down the road of legislating taste is one that has been tried and failed. We also should avoid with the greatest of efforts to avoid implementing more laws in this country that are favorable to those more prudish in nature.

In short, let the bathing suit alone and learn to look the other way when I become older, more senile, and falsely come to the conclusion that taking an mid evening stroll down the board walk in my way-way-too-small Speedos is good idea.

why should the culture which has always been part of life be changed for someone else's culture who moved into that country to start a """ new life""" I use that term lightly cause if you want the morthland ideals and love them so much then why are you living in a new land claiming to start a new way of life?

good for you, i think people call it pride, and those who push for "equality" cant stand for someone to have it. "pride" they want others to, "be as they are and think like them".

For a country that is supposedly "The Land of the Free" we have more regulations than you can shake a stick at. I often wonder does Communist china have as many laws as we now do? In the last 10-12 years we have had more civil liberties taken from us, and yes I said taken from us as we never got to vote on the Patriot act or whether we want some intrusive government employee feeling us up at the Airport, or whether want some power crazy mayor telling us what size soft drink we can order.
My question is who is paying the taxes to the obnoxious civil servants that somehow now think they can run rough shod over our personal business?
I am in favor of occupy, yes I don't want them wrecking crap, but at the same time we have given the political idiots the keys to the city and now they want to play imperial rulers. We need a group of people perhaps 30 million strong to give them a message.
Just like in the movie Network, until somebody by way of masses of people jump up and say I am mad as well and won't take it anymore, they will keep putting it to you.
Please speak up at the polls and vote every stinking incumbent out that you can. I don't care what flavor/party they are, get rid of the offending weight of stupidity.
Don't you think your freedoms are worth it?

If it's privately owned then the owner can ban whatever he or she wants; if it's publicly owned then that's not the case--it's just stupid that you can be on the beach wearing next to nothing, but if you move a few feet away suddenly it's inappropriate?
  • Jim Barnes kir 2012/06/28 21:47:07

Why's it a big deal to see a bit of skin on a boardwalk? That's the point of going to the beach. Besides, you can see tons of people in bathing suits just a few yards from the boardwalk. Stupid.

Again with the prude thing. It's funny how when a person calls somebody else a slut, people are ready to yell "You're a slut-shamer!" and defend the "slut", but when a person calls somebody else a prude it's a-ok. What a shame.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Maybe you are over analyzing this.
  • Aquaduck FunkyMunky 2012/06/29 14:15:07
    Aquaduck
What I'm saying is: if it was switched, and the woman encouraged wearing less clothing on the boardwalk & you called her a slut and posted a picture of a slut T-shirt, then people would be mad at you and call you a slut-shamer (If you don't know what that is look it up). But instead you posted a picture of a prude T-shirt qnd no one says a word, so I think it's a shame that people think it's bad to be a prude but it's cool to sleep around. Just saying.
  • FunkyMunky Aquaduck 2012/06/29 14:38:10 (edited)
    FunkyMunky
I must respectfully disagree. Sluts and prudes catch flack because of what they choose to do and how they do it. Calling someone a slut or a prude doesn't really make a difference in who they are or how they act.

A town telling an entire beach community to cover up because they are uncomfortable with it is prudish. That's what the word means.
  • Aquaduck FunkyMunky 2012/06/29 14:43:21
    Aquaduck
A prude is a woman that chooses not to have sex before mariage. There are prudes that like to wear revealing outfits, just as there are "sluts" that like to dress conservatively. So I don't think it's prudish behavior, that's just the sterotype of prudes.
  • FunkyMunky Aquaduck 2012/06/29 15:40:35 (edited)
    FunkyMunky
Exactly. Sluts can be prudes, and prudes can be slutty. It is a stereotype.

A town enforcing a decades old law that would push everyone into the same category of conservative wardrobe would be a prudish law. Hence, the "official boardwalk uniform".
