Should Bathing Suits Be Banned on the Boardwalk?

The beach, the boardwalk ... they're pretty much the same thing, right? Not in Asbury Park, N.J. Technically, you're not allowed to wear a bathing suit once you step off the beach in the Jersey shore city -- and the chairwoman of the local Republican party wants to enforce that rule, to keep things "classy." Classy on the Jersey shore? (We kid.)

boardwalk

"I understand that social things have changed," said 74-year-old Louise Murray, a city councilwoman from 1997-2001, who's been noticing suits at the boardwalk’s bars and restaurants, The Star-Ledger reports. "But forget that. Just put a shirt on."

The ordinance is believed to be more than 40 years old, and Asbury Park is considered more "high-end" than other Jersey Shore towns. But others are mixed on enforcing the rule.

"How do you satisfy everybody?" Deputy Mayor John Loffredo told The Star-Ledger. "I don’t think it’s appropriate to just wear a bathing suit at a bar. But it’s up to the business. If they allow it, they allow it." He continued, "We don’t have the resources to enforce it. We’re not going to have cops on the boardwalk enforcing that. It’s not going to happen." Do you think bathing suits should be banned on the boardwalk?

If I were a business, I would ask that a cover up of some sort be worn in my business...for men and women...it is just more appropriate and hygenic...
People should have some common sense on this, but of course they won't ...

I think that there should be a balance of things. Bikinis and one piece swim suits are fine.

Unbelievable how fascist SodaHead has become. If a community wants to ban bathing suits then the community has the right to do so. Why the hell should anyone be telling a community what they can or cannot ban? If your community wants people wearing swim suits, good for you. If another community doesn't want it then who the hell are you to tell them they have to allow it? Damn crazy people on this site.

Well, you've got a point. We don't go tell the Amish that they need to allow bathing suits in their community. I think the difference is that their whole community subscribes to one religious belief. Whereas, Ashbury is a public beach and boardwalk. I'm not sure it is ok to invite 'everyone' to your public place and then tell them they can or can't do something.

If it was a private beach and a private boardwalk, then maybe, yes you may have a point. But, since it is public I'm not sure your argument is justified.

Also, maybe if it had been voted on by the community and the majority subscribed to the idea of wearing clothes instead of bathing suits on the boardwalk, then you may be justified. But, they didn't. This is just an ordinance (not voted on by the community), put into place by a city counsel member (not the majority).

I don't know, these are just my thoughts on the issue.

Actually, I am in agreement with your thoughts. If the majority of the people in the community what a dress code, even if it is a public beach, the will of the community should be recognized and followed. As for it being put into place by just a city counsel member, I don't know the law or rules of that community but if the community elects this person and their laws allow a single individual to create and enforce such laws, who are we to tell them they are wrong? Personally, if I lived in a community that allowed such a thing to happen, I would fight for such ordinances to be passed by the common counsel so it better reflects the will of the people. What really gets under my skin is when those who have a minority opinion about ordinances think they somehow have the right to not follow the law because they disagree with it. There are a number or ordinances in my community that I disagree with but I don't blame the government and separate government from the people because the government IS the people. It is this idea that government is a separate entity from the community and the people that really pisses me off. Anything any government does is the fault of the people NOT the fault of some separate entity called "government".

Yeah, and so do conservatives. Trying to ban soda is no different from trying to ban porn. You guys really aren't that much different. You just want to control different things.

Where do you get the idea that I'm a liberal? I just said that liberals and conservatives are just as bad. Why would a liberal say that?

Well, obviously child porn isn't okay. That's already against the law. I'm talking about pornography with consenting adults.

I think it is more classy to wear something over your swimsuit when at the Boardwalk and in stores, bars, restaurants, etc. but some people just chose not to, what's the big deal? If they're not streaking or running around flashing people, there's no issue. People just want to ban everything without reason these days!

I think to wear something sexy on top look's better because it give's you more class than show your body to every body, this is what I do I never walk like that in the streets.this is a personal choice even if you have a nice body I think look better to cover a little.

In situations like these, If morality, courtesy and common sence are not on the inside then outside government intervention will not fix the problem.

There's nothing wrong with it. it's not like they're flashing you. And yeah, I would appreciate if some people would put a shirt on because they're showing so much. But, I'm not going to say that i don't enjoy it. Besides, it makes people look more laid back. It adds a splash of happy to the mood.
