Should Bathing Suits Be Banned on the Boardwalk?

The beach, the boardwalk ... they're pretty much the same thing, right? Not in Asbury Park, N.J. Technically, you're not allowed to wear a bathing suit once you step off the beach in the Jersey shore city -- and the chairwoman of the local Republican party wants to enforce that rule, to keep things "classy." Classy on the Jersey shore? (We kid.)

boardwalk

"I understand that social things have changed," said 74-year-old Louise Murray, a city councilwoman from 1997-2001, who's been noticing suits at the boardwalk’s bars and restaurants, The Star-Ledger reports. "But forget that. Just put a shirt on."

The ordinance is believed to be more than 40 years old, and Asbury Park is considered more "high-end" than other Jersey Shore towns. But others are mixed on enforcing the rule.

"How do you satisfy everybody?" Deputy Mayor John Loffredo told The Star-Ledger. "I don’t think it’s appropriate to just wear a bathing suit at a bar. But it’s up to the business. If they allow it, they allow it." He continued, "We don’t have the resources to enforce it. We’re not going to have cops on the boardwalk enforcing that. It’s not going to happen." Do you think bathing suits should be banned on the boardwalk?

If one can accept bathing suits on the beach seeing them a few yards / meters away should hardly matter. If they bother someone that much, stay away.

Get a kick out of conservatives' hypocrisy. They scream about government interfering in what they want. Here the conservatives want an enforced law restricting people from wearing clothing conservatively unacceptable.

Being a conservative I have no problem with people wearing whatever they choose, ceartianly not wearing a bathing suit on the boardwalk, so I believe that I am not a hypocrite, and that your judgment is clouded.

My judgment certainly is NOT clouded. As a conservative, you would be in a very distinct minority because conservatives, as a rule, want to FORCE other people to abide by their philosophies. Conservatives don't believe in freedom unless it's THEIR right to own a gun. The overwhelming majority of conservatives WOULD have a problem with the wearing of bathing suits on the boardwalk. But, though I disagree with your conclusion, you posted a very measured and calm comment so I give you "props" for that.

I believe the entire Bill of Rights pertain to everyone, and always have, so it is not just the second amendment, but all of the BOR's that ensure our freedoms from government.

Not everyone claiming to be a conservative, or liberal, is one, but a mixture of both.

Be difficult to enforce, it's been accepted for many years as part of the scene there, why bother. If they're not going to be classy, more clothes won't help. What then no skinny jeans, no polo shirts, where does it end?

I think people need to get over their issues with the human form. Also, I'm more then confident that most of the people who approve the ban are out of shape.

Jersey Shore isn't like what you see on TV... frankly, I don't want to look at someones a** hanging out. Nor do I want to see someones sweaty man boobs hanging over a food counter or package bulging out of an almost see through fabric. It's just having respect for other people and kids... wrong to ban, not too much to ask. "Class" isn't about your income bracket... it's how you carry and present yourself.

I know...and people have the right to dress as they wish. I honestly don't like the beach anyway but I just have this weird thing going on with respect for myself and others when it comes to some things... I'm the type of person that holds doors for people.
  • imsmarter Quinni 2012/06/29 16:19:01
    imsmarter
I hold doors for people too. That has nothing to do with realizing that the human form is what it is. Why is a bathing suit okay for the sand but not the boardwalk? Why is it okay on the cover of magazines but not on the boardwalk? And if you don't like them anyway, it doesn't matter all that much now does it?
  • Quinni imsmarter 2012/06/29 16:30:56
    Quinni
I still go to the boardwalk for lunch, dinner, or a ride... but not down on the beach. I don't read magazines (except an occasional National Geo and the like at the docs office) so i don't see the covers.
  • imsmarter Quinni 2012/06/29 16:43:07
    imsmarter
Doesn't change the fact that they exist. And it's upsetting that you assume people who wear bathing suits on the boardwalk lack self respect or respect for others. That's a pretty big generalization. If you can avoid looking at magazines you can avoid looking at them.
  • Quinni imsmarter 2012/06/29 17:37:16
    Quinni
um, it's not upsetting me... if it was i would have spewed hatred.... which I don't do. I said I had this weird thing going on with respect. I never said they didn't have respect... The sweaty boobs man, yeah... that i don't want near my food and a bare a** shouldn't be standing in line with cheeks the height of my niece or nephews face. What if they picked up MRSA somewhere and back up into them? I'm not saying throw clothes on, just tie a shirt around your waist. My reasons aren't based on the sexual aspect ... although I'm not comfortable with a bulge in a speedo too small, rising to attention in front of my little niece's face. I said in my original post that banning was wrong.
