Should All Social Media Managers Be Under the Age of 25?

Cathryn Sloane graduated from the University of Iowa in 2012 -- which makes the majority of us feel pretty old. And Sloane agrees! She doesn't want us old fogies working in the social media industry, saying that age makes a difference in social media expertise because of perspective and experience.

She writes: Sixth-graders who are now creating their Facebook profiles know nothing other than Timeline, and adults in their 40’s who are tweeting with their iPhone apps have no idea that the old way to do it was by texting 40404.
TIME Magazine wrote in 2009 that Facebook began for youngsters in college, but it took their parents to fulfill its ultimate destiny. TIME provided a "Top 10 Reasons Facebook is For Old Fogies" including the insult to seniors "We're too old to remember e-mail addresses."

Does Cathryn Sloane have a point? Should marketing veterans from Madison Ave and Mad Men leave social media to the kids?

NEXTGENJOURNAL.COM reports:
No one else will ever be able to have as clear an understanding of social media as our generation, no matter how much they think they do.

Ah ... the folly of youth ..
give her a cookie and glass of milk ..
    wait a few years ..
    and she'll wonder ..
why in the world did she think she KNEW Everything ..
    when in retrospect ..
she was just a neophyte with a touch of arrogance!

(personally .. I think that a Senior Citizen .. great wit, sharp mind .. wonderful sense of humor and a good knowledge of the Rules of respectful discussion/debate is the best for management hires for social networking!)

Most 25 year olds don't have the experience for management.

Young people do a good job as well. I just don't think that everyone should be under 25.

She's got a point, but I don't think you can apply that logic across the board. Look at Steve Jobs for crying out loud - that man knew more about technology than most any age!

I told my daughter when she turned 18: "Congratulations! You are now the smartest you will ever be! From now on, you will bet stupider and stupider, until even *I* seem like I actually might know something."

What would we know we have only lived history and were part of the formulation of the net. How many of these kids can use their computer in DOS mode? I agree with you age is often arrogance in either direction when it omits new ideas and old experience.

    Oh, so true!

Can't even imagine what they'd say if I showed them my keypunched programs from back then ..

They weren't around when there was lousy equipment like the Tandy Dandy 1000 with a 14 volume manual in order to operate it and if you entered on key wrong it all your data was gone and would have to be re-entered. You brought back a few nightmares with Fortran, LOL

That limit on the number of characters was sure a nightmare!
(my goodness .. it was my command of math that let me enjoy Fortran!)

These young ones don't know how easy they have it with C++, Java, HTML ..

    (Shrugging shoulders) ..
In a lot of ways ..
there are so many now .. that never have known true hunger, need ..
who have always had full stomachs, good clothes, not had to make their own anything ..
go to the grocery (instead of hunt, fish, grow their own gardens/canning)

There's NO Appreciation for the ingenuity .. the work that it took to build everything ..
Just because one is a bit 'longer in the tooth'
doesn't imply that one is .. out of it ..
(or in some way less capable than the younger generation) ..

For like many other elders ..
I enjoy continuing to learn .. have new experiences .. keeping up with the tech and knowledge in my fields of study ..
in a lot of ways .. the experiences of the past with the new tech now (that was a twinkle in our eyes) is exciting a whole generation of elders to continue to create and be productive well into our lives .. and even in our retirement years ..

I hear ya. Working isn't understood by so many. I believe that escapades into our economic situation as well. Youth wanting so much with no care of debt to income ratio. Banks financing with no care because government will accept bankruptcy and print more bills. Ahhh....fudge it. I see so many yards uncut with kids inside the house playing video games.
