Shortening words in speech - annoying or acceptable?

I'm not talking about online acronyms e.g. 'lol' 'brb' 'imo' etc.
I'm talking about people saying 'totes' instead of totally, 'defo' instead of definitely, 'presh' instead of precious, 'obvi' instead of obviously...etc.
I understand shortening when you're writing quick messages i.e. when online/in text messages, but in actual speech directly to another person?!
So, do you see it as a natural progression of language or a nuisance? acceptable or annoying?
