Shared Backyards: Brilliant or Bad Idea?

Robert Frost said that good fences make good neighbors. But these days a growing number of homeowners are knocking them down in order to create larger communal backyards.

Joining your backyard with your neighbor’s means there is more room for gardening and entertaining, children and pets and can run around more freely, and you may even be able to build that swimming pool or tennis court you’ve always dreamed of. But the extra space doesn’t come without added difficulties.

Gardening expenses can be split evenly, but who pulls the weeds and who gets to pick the fruit? Post a sign-up sheet for use of the communal table? Or is there an always-room-to-share policy? What happens when one neighbor wants to sell?” asked Anne Marie Chaker of The Wall Street Journal.

Many of the individuals who have opted for shared backyards explain that they are are hammering these details out in monthly decision-making meetings and in legal documents. The potential risks are evident, but if you actually like your neighbors and are willing to give up some of your privacy, yard-sharing seems like a fantastic option. (That is if you live in a neighborhood that hasn’t prohibited the practice.)

So, what do you think SodaHeads? Is yard-sharing brilliant or a bad idea?

I talk to people who shoot people, I am one of the few people on this planet, actually capable of talking to and having a good time with anyone, because I dont hold judgement like you.

I guess everyone needs to have something they're proud of. I'm not big on socializing with evil and I think you've proven that fences are necessary.

I like my privacy too much to share my backyard. I would much rather have a tall fence.

This is a very common misunderstood line of Robert Frost's. The Mending Wall does include the line “good fences make good neighbors,” but it also paints the character speaking that line as a bit of a twit. The poem tells a story of two neighbors with a wall between them, but every winter the wall falls apart. So the neighbors have to meet and mend the wall, spending more time together than they otherwise would have.

People do the same way for celebrities quotes, music, and etc. people think so hard to come up with their own opinion of what they mean. Maybe its not always that hard. Maybe they mean what they mean.

You obviously don't read poetry. When Shakespeare's Romeo says "Juliet is the sun", he doesn't actually mean Juliet is Earth's star of hot plasma interwoven with magnetic fields.

Just because I said maybe. doesnt mean it is true for all poetry for for all things people say.

You still don't understand poetry. Poetry is very metaphorical and are like parables. It's not supposed to be taken literal. What don't you get about that? Instead of saying you think you know what Robert Frost is saying just by reading one line, how about you actually read the whole poem before drawing any conclusions. Seriously, it's like listening to someone who thinks they know what a movie is about after watching one scene.

you gave me a "definition" based on your opinion. I still think that sometimes they say things that they actually mean. that doesnt mean that what I say is wrong. Because hey, all you were doing is giving an opinion of what you think it means and I was doing the same. You can try to argue with me all you want but the truth is, no one is wrong.

People can be adults; its not hard to section off and label. But individual independence is a good thing and should be encouraged. I have an 'apocalypse garden' myself and I have more food than I can possibly eat and I constantly hear people complain about the cost of food. Trouble is I don't have anyone to share it with. I share a bit of it with the rabbits who end up in my freezer. I know where they've been. Eating disease free and steroid free organic produce. I have leaf lettuce, swiss chard, peppers, tomatos, onions and a reefer full of produce I can barely finish.

Thats like having no backyard, its like having a park. I want my privacy. There is no way in Hell that if I had a house I would want to tear my fence down. You know what? Since there is so much traffic I would make my fence bigger and stronger.

If you have yard so small that you want to combine it with your neighbor's yard, you're living too close together. Time to move out of that sardine can and find yourself a REAL house.
