Shared Backyards: Brilliant or Bad Idea?

Robert Frost said that good fences make good neighbors. But these days a growing number of homeowners are knocking them down in order to create larger communal backyards.

Joining your backyard with your neighbor’s means there is more room for gardening and entertaining, children and pets and can run around more freely, and you may even be able to build that swimming pool or tennis court you’ve always dreamed of. But the extra space doesn’t come without added difficulties.

Gardening expenses can be split evenly, but who pulls the weeds and who gets to pick the fruit? Post a sign-up sheet for use of the communal table? Or is there an always-room-to-share policy? What happens when one neighbor wants to sell?” asked Anne Marie Chaker of The Wall Street Journal.

Many of the individuals who have opted for shared backyards explain that they are are hammering these details out in monthly decision-making meetings and in legal documents. The potential risks are evident, but if you actually like your neighbors and are willing to give up some of your privacy, yard-sharing seems like a fantastic option. (That is if you live in a neighborhood that hasn’t prohibited the practice.)

So, what do you think SodaHeads? Is yard-sharing brilliant or a bad idea?

I don't think it is the greatest idea unless there is written contract outlining everything than it may work.

I dont see anything wrong with it.

As long as both you and your neighbour(and whoever else it may affect) agree on it and respect each other's privacy and whatnot then fenceless yard ftw.

As long as all parties concerned get along well and agree ahead of time to the rules. This type of arrangement will not work with a lot of people as they are unable to overcome the basic human nature of selfishness.

It's all one big kumbaya party until someone gets hurt. Then they get a lawyer, find out exactly whose property they were on, and the fun is all over. And you might loose you're backyard, front yard, and the house sitting on it.

Horrible idea, it's hard enough to keep people from leaving dog crap lying around in your yard without encouraging people to walk their dogs there. As far as a communal garden goes, good luck getting people to take care of it equally (although you won't have much trouble getting people to share the fruits of your labor equally).

This looks like something out of that crazy Tv show doomsday preppers. I can see how this would would in the beginning, what happens when you stop having an open yard and your former friend has a larger back yard than you all of a sudden?

the front yard can be for the community, people are always walking all over my lawn and letting their dogs poop all over it.
the backyard is my solitude. I like to blast reggae or metal and sit in my hot tub reading Stephen King. Don't need children running around or the next door neighbours scary dog ruining that for me.

trying to be a good neighbor never pays off. been there done that. I love gardening and have three. yes it is alot of work i am out there sometimes all day. But i have vegetables, herbs and fruit. And i don't have anyone standing over me. Neighbors are not the same when i was growing up, and it is a shame.

It might work if both neighbors have common interests (gardening, pets, pool, etc) and work out the details (dogs, visitors, etc).

If you have small back yards and like all your neighbors, it might be okay. I have no neighbors and live on a block by myself. I like it that way. I don't know if I know how to act living close to people. lol

I would LOVE to do this and if I could get my neighbors to agree, I'd do it. I know some people feel a great deal of reservation about this, but me - not so much. I have three very nice dogs... (The one on the left in my pic has crossed the Rainbow Bridge and we adopted a pitbull/american bulldog mix from a local rescue about 2.5 wks ago.)

I might call for a block meeting and see what folks this about this idea.

I might probably do the same... At first I thought it was a terrible idea... because of my own space... but now I think it´s a great idea... Now I my kids could be much more free and also my dogs... got 2... Peckipuddle... another mixe of a golden retriever and labrador... I think I was wrong at first... thanks for making me look at it in this perspective! ;)

I think the important thing is communication and very clear guidelines for use. Research it and have monthly meetings to make sure all are enjoying it - deal with any issues that may arise - and make sure all are doing their parts to ensure all can enjoy it. Also, discuss sharing of foods that may be planted and how/who will distribute it. Make sure all pets are vaccinated from everything from rabies to distemper to parvo and have their bordatella vaccines. There are a lot of things to consider, but I really think this could work very well with cooperation from neighbors.

My backyard is my oasis. I don't want to go to my back porch to read a book and be sharing it with other families or children. If I want someone in my backyard, I'll invite them there. I have a large backyard and I like my fences.
