Shared Backyards: Brilliant or Bad Idea?

Robert Frost said that good fences make good neighbors. But these days a growing number of homeowners are knocking them down in order to create larger communal backyards.

Joining your backyard with your neighbor’s means there is more room for gardening and entertaining, children and pets and can run around more freely, and you may even be able to build that swimming pool or tennis court you’ve always dreamed of. But the extra space doesn’t come without added difficulties.

Gardening expenses can be split evenly, but who pulls the weeds and who gets to pick the fruit? Post a sign-up sheet for use of the communal table? Or is there an always-room-to-share policy? What happens when one neighbor wants to sell?” asked Anne Marie Chaker of The Wall Street Journal.

Many of the individuals who have opted for shared backyards explain that they are are hammering these details out in monthly decision-making meetings and in legal documents. The potential risks are evident, but if you actually like your neighbors and are willing to give up some of your privacy, yard-sharing seems like a fantastic option. (That is if you live in a neighborhood that hasn’t prohibited the practice.)

So, what do you think SodaHeads? Is yard-sharing brilliant or a bad idea?

I wouldn't want to share my backyard with anyone at all, especially if they have dogs are unruly kids, or your neighbors are untrustworthy.

I really don't see the harm in it if the person that is willingly let you and that person that your neighbours with doesn't mind or that your real close friends, but I can also see this also turning more and more into a disaster and the neighbour could complain on about where gardening things should go or what not. Its something worth trying if you know the person really well.

I disagree.....they did awesome with Sony and Chess as well!

Also, you can't forget the Monty Python song to their honor, "...they only come up to your knees, but the cute and they're cuddly and they're ready to please..." ;-)

ONLY if you have a lawyer look at the contract that everyone signs. Then maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe it will work. Most people like some area where they can have privacy.

But only if you are the kind who plays well with others. Not for control freaks, possessive folks, or those who really like their privacy, needless to say.

Remember these are not neighbors voluntary "sharing" a piece of their land, these neighbors are signing *legal contracts* that relinquish some of their property rights. Meaning if you one day if you decide something in the agreement is not fair and opt out without your neighbors agreeing to it, you can be taken to court and sued.

I did not buy my home to negotiate my property rights away.

Exactly. It seems like for the long haul -- this could potentially backfire, and cause a lot more trouble than it's worth.

I personally; Wouldn't risk it. Especially with how indecisive I can be. Lol

I can imagine a lot of conflicts, bad enough when you just have back yards that meet each other. My stupid next door neighbor thinks the world is his parking lot.Thank goodness there is a fence or my lawn would be packed dirt like his.

I don't think it's as simple as brilliant vs bad idea, just too many variables. I only voted brilliant because there are far fewer that voted that way. First thing that comes to mind are pets. If my neighbor has a pack of St.Bernards that dump by my patio, then that just wouldn't get it! What if the neighbor is a neat freak or a slob? I can foresee advantages and disadvantages, it all depends on both neighbors, lot size, etc.

Shared property is always a bad idea. When I was growing up we lived in a duplex and shared a common front and back yard, there was always tension between my father and our neighbor because of it.

I prefer my privacy. A fence isnt always necisary, but a barrier of sorts (even scattered landscaping) is nice to keep the neighbors in their place.
