Sex No Longer Sells for Abercrombie & Fitch: Do You Shop There?

Abercrombie & Fitch has relied on sex to sell their products since the '90s, and they thrived for years despite facing controversy for selling sexy underwear to 10-year-old girls, and placing pornographic material throughout the store.

But it looks like even the oldest marketing trick in the book can no longer save the retail chain: they've lost a third of their market value and within the next three years will have closed over 250 US stores. Will you miss Abercrombe & Fitch if they end up going out of business? Do you still shop there?

No, I've never actually been in an Abercrombie and Fitch. I don't like the way they market and don't appreciate the target audience some of this advertising is aimed at, either. I have shopped at Hollister, though. Which if I remember correctly is ran by the same people? But I don't recall the same kind of advertising there. Although, if you do go in the shop; bring a gasmask and a flashlight. ;) It's not somewhere I'd shop regularly but I bought a tee and a hoodie from there because they were really, really comfy haha. Very expensive though.

I have gone in their but the prices are insane. For a shirt? I don't think so. I never liked their ads because they lack creativity, if they can't evolve with the times then they deserve to go out of business. I heard about the jersey shore thing, and even though those guys get on my nerves, they should be able to wear whatever the hell they want. Selling sex is the oldest trick in the book, but there are a lot of places that sell romance and sensuality without being vulgar so really what is their excuse?

Every single time I walk in there, I come back out empty-handed and smelling like a guy. Honestly, the perfume/cologne they spray in their stores is disgustingly overwhelming. And everything's overpriced. :|

Not since they stopped selling jeans at their stores for anyone over a size 10. They've excluded a vast amount of sales by doing that. They're just plain snobs. They only want certain people wearing their clothes, to the point of even offering to pay the Jersey Shore guys to NOT wear their line. I'm thinking people are wising up and getting the hint loud and clear by A&F;'s marketing moves.

Never shopped there, and won't miss it. Which is too bad in a way, because A&F; used to be a really classy high-end store. They didn't need to go the cheap sex route.

That's because everyone uses sex to sell everything. It's lost its effect on most people. Of course that doesn't stop companies from pushing the envelope further and further, but honestly... it reminds me of something I used to say as a kid, "Every place in vegas has neon lights. Why does every building in vegas insist on having neon lights? At this rate, the best way to stand out in Vegas would be to NOT have neon lights!"

I used to, but they're so expensive and it's just not worth it imo. They're ridiculously overpriced and the quality of their clothing isn't even that great. I've found cuter stuff at Target.

I don't think they would have much for me. Lately , I've been buying most of my shirts from Duluth Trading. Longtail shirts. That extra 3" in back keep anyone from being shocked if I have to bend over to do anything.

For one, it's for chicks with a waist size somewhere in the negatives or Jonas Brothers kinda guys. For two, if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it. Yeah, it's THAT kind of place.

If that's not bad enough, they've had occurrences of racial discrimination before as well as discriminate against hiring people who "don't fit the role", AKA any bleach-blonde female that's in the petite size range or model-worthy washboard-ab males, and usually both Caucasian.

So yeah, this place can just rot for all I care. I couldn't care less that they sell with sex or with Telletubbies.

The race thing isn't an issue at the A&F in our area. There are people of varied races & cultures working the store. I will say I think they discriminate against people who don't fit their ideology of pretty or good looking. The one thing the employee's there have in common is that they're all size 0 or less with pretty much the same type of features, same type of body style...I've yet to see a person that doesn't have the "perfect" body working there. So yeah, in that regard, there is discrimination going on.

If they relied more on lower prices perhaps they'd sell more.

BTW: Is that picture a A&F; ad? I don't even see any clothing in it!
