It can cause skin cancer and permanent brain-loss.
You tan too much, your brain goes out the window, along with a few thousand dollars.

not in moderate amounts late in the day.
    Tanning beds seem suspect.

I've read sun tanning can be just as bad too sometimes. The same with dark skinned people using bleaching cream to lighten their skin. Be happy, be you.

I'm working for a great skin care spa and have been to a training all about skin. I was told they lie in tanning bed places. It is NOT safe or good for you one bit. In fact if you've had one or more burns in your life you quadruple your odds of skin cancer. With the amount of times I've gotten a sunburn as a teen, I will most likely have skin cancer removed at some point, and there is already a spot on my nose that I'm having checked out. The tanning beds are just as bad. And it does not matter if you do not burn. You may tan beautifully but you will pay in older age. In fact older looking skin will come much sooner for you. Stay away from it all. Moisturize your skin and protect it from the sun and tanning beds. DON'T do it EVER!

    Fake tanning = bad.
Decent amount (not overdoing!) natural suntanning = good.

We all need the sun for Vitamin D.
Anything in excess will hurt you ... except chocolate!

Yes and no....For one thing, I don't trust tanning beds. Seems pretty unnatural.

As in this one other question, about the overly tanned mother and her 6 yr. old child. That is just dang scary....

pretty unnatural overly tanned mother 6 yr child dang scary

But natural outside sun tanning, is OK by me....within reason. As it is with just about everything in life.

Oh, ...and just curious...how did all the text on this page become 'slant text'?...
    ...I like it :)

Yep. I think tanning is very bad. It's not healthy for your skin, and people look stupid who get to dark if you ask me. It can't be attractive. I mean, check this person out:

    too tan

In moderation and you use a little common sense about it.I never have,or will, use a tanning bed.I like the feel of the sun on my skin and I like being outdoors.I use a light sunscreen on my face because it tends to burn. The rest of me just tans. Then afterwards I always put moisturizing lotion on.

Tanning damages skin cells, my grandmother was living proof, that tanning is unhealthy.

I think it is, but it's not illegal for adults to do that. So adults do choose what they want to do with their bodies whether it's healthy or not.

It's the skin's attempt to protect itself from damaging UV rays. The damage is cumulative. Better to protect oneself from the rays so that tanning isn't needed.

Tanning itself is not bad, but using a tanning bed is bad. It's good to get natural sunlight, just use UV protection and don't over do it.

Just like everything in life, there are limits.

I never wear sunblock, but I cover up or go inside if I think I'm getting a little crisp.

Fake tanning in a tanning bed, probably bad.
Being outside and letting yourself get a natural tan, good.

People NEED a certain amount of sunlight to be healthy. People can go overkill on sunblock just like they can over-tan. Many people today are deficient in vitamin D, which is now shown to be linked with depression and other psychological issues.

Use a lower SPF; SPF over 30 is useless anyway and just don't let yourself burn.

It's okay to use, as long as you don't overdo it.

However, if you start looking like the girl in the picture, or the Tanning Mom, then I advise that you stop tanning, and go see a doctor, because too much tanning* has been known to cause skin cancer...

*- By tanning, I meant artifical tanning, like those you get from a tanning salon, not a natural tan from the sun

Yes...but if you do not get some sun light you might end up being low in vitamin D. Just don't go back yourself.

I think tanning in a tanning bed is terribly for your skin, plus it makes the individual look orange and looks lie a fake tan
    But
If its a natural tan from the sun then i don't think there's anything wrong with that, it gives you a healthy glow while providing vitamins from the natural light, it looks better too :)

If it's a natural tan it can look pretty good. If you overdo it? It's not attractive.
