Sean 'Diddy' Coombs Is Worth $550 Million. Should His Son Have Received a $54,000 Scholarship To Attend Cash-Strapped UCLA?

It diminishes Justin to say he didn't deserve the scholarship because his father is stinkin' rich. If he received the scholarship and was a terrible student/athlete, now that would be something to rant and rave about... The noble thing might have been to forgo the scholarship to a needier student but he's done nothing wrong in accepting a privately funded scholarship.

His accomplishment. If Diddy were a decent guy he might voluntarily offer a schloarship to the next kid in line.....but in no way is Diddy obligated, either.

Absolutely.. what his dad has should have nothing to do with him being able to receive a scholarship for something he has worked hard to earn.. Too many people worry about something other people have. Get over it and just worry about yourself.

The libertarian side of me says that UCLA can do whatever it wants with its private scholarship money, irrespective of the recipient’s background. Or, as Justin Combs himself tweeted yesterday , “Regardless what the circumstances are, I put that work in!!!! PERIOD.” You gotta love a kid like that. All power to you, sir, and major props on your accomplishment.

That said, state university football programs are not islands unto themselves. They would not exist without the larger educational institution, whose brand, infrastructure, and very existence can largely be attributed to public funding. Moreover, one of the mandates of public universities is to provide quality education to mostly in-state residents at the lowest possible cost. So, the public does have something to say about how any division of a state university divvies up its money, however that money was accrued.
