After decades of working on it, some scientists say they see an AIDS vaccine within reach. Do you believe it?
REUTERS.COM reports:
At an ill-fated press conference in 1984, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Margaret Heckler boldly predicted an effective AIDS vaccine would be available within just two years.

Probably not. The cynic in me understands that there's more money in treatments than cures. There hasn't been a bonafide cure for a disease in well over sixty years. 'Strangely' that was at just about the same time as big pharma came onto the world scene.

Maybe yes, maybe no. However Aids is 100% preventable. I have a great deal 0f sympathy for babies born with Aids. I have zero sympathy for those who caught Aids from unprotected sex.

But, cynically, only if it is profitable for the pharmaceutical companies, so probably No.

Yes, if it's something they have to continue taking, like blood pressure medicine.

And not for any other big disease, either. Big Pharma makes trillions offering 'treatments'
for AIDS, Diabetes, and Cancer. Why would they ever allow a cure to come along and
stop them from depositing all that beautiful money into their overstuffed bank account?
We can fly machines to the ends of the Universe, make astounding electronic breakthroughs, uncover the "God Particle".....but somehow, we can't seem to find a cure
for one single money making disease! Really? How very curious.

On diabetes we are closer than ever (at least type 2). Cancer can't be cured....that will never happen (the cause of cancer can't be prevented). HIV is just very difficult, but at least there is a possibility of a cure.

Sadly, there are too many types and subtypes of AIDS for a vaccine to be "captured" that will cover all of the strains. MAYBE, our scientific geniuses will be able to come up with something that will protect against the most common types. I hope so. It's a cruel, vicious disease.

One person's realism is another person's cynicism (or paranoia :-) ). I don't mince words, but these days I couch them circumspectly.

    Does not make sense.

Wouldn't they make more money keeping them alive?

A dead patient does not pay for meds.

They are keeping people alive, which makes sense; just not curing them. If everyone was cured, then their would be no money from HIV medication and education.

60 years? I figured it's been a while, but that is just baffling. We really need to dismantle pharma control over us before it's too late.

Yes. It's been about 60 years since the last full-on 'cure' for a major disease either through vaccination or by way of treatment which culminates in eradication of the pathogenic agent.

And yes, big farm is the PRIMARY reason for this particular technological 'devolution.'

You're not alone. It's a real dilemma, that one. Most vaccinations are proven, perfectly safe and medically sound, but how is a mom or dad supposed to know which is which without A) using their child as a guinea pig or B) going to medical school for a long, LONG time? Even the 'safe' ones may be injurious to a child with 'just the right (or wrong as the case may be)' allergies or body chemistry.

And the call is made all the tougher in a society which looks upon the refusal to vaccinate as a form of child abuse. This is one of those topics which make me thank God daily that I never had any kids!

I would have never risked her health if I had been awake and seen the reports or thought about the dangers. I assumed if they weren't safe, they wouldn't give them but I was naive.
