After decades of working on it, some scientists say they see an AIDS vaccine within reach. Do you believe it?
REUTERS.COM reports:
At an ill-fated press conference in 1984, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Margaret Heckler boldly predicted an effective AIDS vaccine would be available within just two years.

Probably not. The cynic in me understands that there's more money in treatments than cures. There hasn't been a bonafide cure for a disease in well over sixty years. 'Strangely' that was at just about the same time as big pharma came onto the world scene.

Not in the next years (I hope I'm wrong on that aspect). But in the next decades, I believe so.

People having reasonable access to it though, not a chance. If you have the cash / credit then yes, but I doubt your insurance will cover it.

Yes. Already in the last decade, the life expectancy has shot up from 8-12 years to an almost full human life expectancy (providing you have the access to and can afford the necessary drugs). We are human beings and are very very resourceful at fighting disease. It's only a matter of time before we cure it. Of course, another disease may then cross the species barrier and become a brand new problem for us..

I also don't buy the conspiracy theories of scientists sitting on cures. Granted there are some corrupted by greed, but most scientists don't get into disease research for money (because most of the time it pays crap to the actual researchers) you get into it because you love science and you either a. want to change the world or b. Want to become famous for changing the world. Neither of which is served by sitting on a cure that'll put your name into the history books alongside the likes of Jenner.

Plus the idea that hundreds or even thousands of people working for different comapnies can keep a secret as big as a cure for aids? Not likely whatever the motivation.

The cure is there. Right now there is too much money in research to actually "find" it. Once the cure is found, all that research money goes away.

If you can find a way to stop promiscuous behavior, be it sex or shared needle use you can cure a great deal of it.

There is a cure! It's called chastity. If everyone on earth had sexual relations with only one person in their whole life, AIDS would never have made it to victim #2.

That's why I worded my answer carefully. If there would be no infidelity, there wouldn't even be children born with AIDS.

That is not true. If your husband/wife has AIDS (was born with it) then there is a big chance the child will have AIDS too. No cheating needed.
  • theprot... Syl 2012/07/21 21:50:19

Read my answer carefully. If the first person who had the mutation we call AIDS had only one homosexual partner, the disease would have died out when they died.

Now this is the first time you mention the person is homosexual and thus unlikely to have biological children. That is hindsight though, that's not going to help us now.
  • theprot... Syl 2012/07/24 15:17:12
    theprothinker
I understand your point of view, but chastity and monogamy would wipe out almost all new cases of AIDS, with the exception of those poor children who pay for the sins of their parents by being born with it, and that's by FAR the minority of AIDS victims.

It is already here now !! No intervenous drug use, unprocted sex, and "NO MORE BIG MONEY FOR BIG PHARMA !! I think that the last "big cure" was for polio !! The diseases that they "cured" are still around,...........polio, diptheria, common cold, etc

Personally, without any physical proof to back my claim up (because frankly If I did I would be extremely rich or extremely hated) I think they have already found a cure and it's simply a secret only some are privy to. Think about it, all the money they receive in donations each year, all the money for research and development not to mention all the money obtained from dispensing the cocktail of drugs and the housing projects that are there to help those who don't have anywhere to go. There is so much money involved in the HIV/AIDS that they wouldn't know what to do if it was cured for the general public. It's much easier to allow majority to suffer, than to give up all the profits.
