A study published Friday from the journal Cell describes an experimental drug that is effectively a birth control pill... for men. Well, male mice, for now. When this drug was tested daily on male mice, it "reduced their sperm count so much that the animals were rendered effectively infertile. When the drug was stopped, sperm counts and quality were restored and the mice were able to sire healthy offspring."

In a commentary that accompanies the study, Dr. William Bremner of the University of Washington in Seattle shares their optimism. He called the drug "an exciting new approach to male contraception." Do you think birth control pills for men is genius -- or unnecessary?

LATIMES.COM reports:
Scientists develop a birth control pill for males that works in mice and is completely reversible, study finds.

Long past the time where EACH party ..
    contributing biological content ..
is RESPONSIBLE for any results (or prevention of pregnancy) ..
What would be even better ..
is if there was more emphasis on the RESPONSIBILITY of being actual ADULTS ..
    and not rutting animals ..
(even the livestock doesn't breed indiscriminately .. )

Sure beats plugging your backside with Testosterone injections, which will achieve the same result with small dosages in long-term use (1 year or longer). Too bad the male birth control pill dosen't enhance libido and improve your Squat, Bench and Deadlift as well :)

Actually, testosterone therapy as a form of male contraception has been prescribed by doctors years before this new pill. I suggest perusing what you read before assuming the role of a fatuous DUMBASS....

I've seen my mom when she forgets birth control, so I'd prefer not acting like her if I had to start taking it. It's a good idea, but no thanks.

Now, force it upon Irresponsible people who should not be having children, further pushing a struggling earth to its limit. No more commercials for feed the children because...well, they are not having any more. No more fat people standing on the welfare line with three or more children in tow, who look forward to the day when they are standing on that line with children of their own.

Completely unnecessary.Aside from the fact that God Almighty outlaws birth control, we are entering an era wherein he now has the largest family and will inherit the earth.

Muslims are reproducing at a rate of 5 to 2; meaning Mama and Papa radical Islamites are having, on average, a minimum of 5 muslim rug rats. Christians, by comparison, are having an average of 1/2 child and these numbers become exponential.

At the current rates of procreation, Muslims will far outnumber every other religious persuasion by 2035,. no matter what we do now, Muslims will inherit the earth by their sheer ability to reproduce. The rest of us are doomed.

You are joking? When did God Almighty outlaw birthcontrol? When is the last time youtalked to him? Clearly the dumbest answer I have seen on the subject. Let the damn dumb Muslims have as many as they want and overstress their social systems. Intelligent people need to stop and think and not get in a "outbreeding" war. it is your dumb ass that is doomed, stupid kills, believe it or not.

You begin with a blatant lie, God does NOT forbid birth control, then continue with a paranoid rant based on a second lie, that Earth is ot be inherited by the largest family? Absolute rubbish.

As long as it doesn't cause permanent sterility. It would be nice to just take a pill. That way you don't have to depend on the women being truthful.

Obviously this drug is still in the early stages of testing. They still have years of testing ahead to make sure that there aren't any long- (or short-) term effects.
But overall it's a great idea. Despite all of the responses I've seen on here, condoms are not 100% effective. And some women do lie about taking birth control to trick a guy into getting them pregnant. A new drug isn't a cure-all, but it will provide men with another option, an added layer of prevention, and a personal responsibility for their own reproduction choices.

This is long overdue. I do, however, sincerely hope that any possible long tern effects
can be safely midigated. They definenately need to be sure of this before releasing their
product to the general market. Also let's put this product within reach of all men, and not
just to those men who are fortunate enough to be counted among the rich, the famous,
the powerful, and among those who are otherwise well to do. This product must be made
    readily available to all men.

It might rid the world of the stupid excuse that some males have that they were trapped because the female lied and said they were on the pill. In one word: culpability for spreading one's seed.

I hate that excuse! I don't care even if she did lie to you; you still lay down with her, it's your responsibility too. Especially if it's a one night stand, then why would you trust a stranger anyways? It's just an excuse for guys that don't want to own up to their mistakes & handle their responsibility.

What? Is something wrong with female version of "the pill"? I thought the male version was tying up the tubes. I hate Big Pharma anyway for pushing poisons and people are even more stupid for taking them and ending up in an early grave at the rate of over 100,000 per year, when if we would educate ourselves to handling our own health care, Big Pharma would starve, for which a college professor stated many years ago; "It would be worse for the fishes, but better for human beings, to take all the drugs and throw them into the sea."

Now the man has no excuse for getting someone pregnant. They need to be responsible for themselves, just like women need to be responsible for themselves.

Men have the ability to reproduce long after nature stops women from doing so, so men need access to birth control from puberty to death. The problem is, will a man take "the pill" or will he count all of the illegitimate children he's fathered as some badge of manhood?

Why not just use a condom? We don't need to be putting any unnecessary medicine in our body or altering any of our natural processes. If you aren't safe with the slim possibility of the condom breaking, don't have sex. Simple as that.
