Scientists Create Birth Control Pill for Men: Genius or Unnecessary?

A study published Friday from the journal Cell describes an experimental drug that is effectively a birth control pill... for men. Well, male mice, for now. When this drug was tested daily on male mice, it "reduced their sperm count so much that the animals were rendered effectively infertile. When the drug was stopped, sperm counts and quality were restored and the mice were able to sire healthy offspring."

In a commentary that accompanies the study, Dr. William Bremner of the University of Washington in Seattle shares their optimism. He called the drug "an exciting new approach to male contraception." Do you think birth control pills for men is genius -- or unnecessary?

LATIMES.COM reports:
Scientists develop a birth control pill for males that works in mice and is completely reversible, study finds.

Long past the time where EACH party ..
    contributing biological content ..
is RESPONSIBLE for any results (or prevention of pregnancy) ..
What would be even better ..
is if there was more emphasis on the RESPONSIBILITY of being actual ADULTS ..
    and not rutting animals ..
(even the livestock doesn't breed indiscriminately .. )

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's Genius but it's about time. Now that we can keep population controlled, maybe they'll put the cancer curing drugs on the market.

Anyway we can keep the unwanted children from being born, and give the women a chance to not being the only responsible part of the pregnancy situation is a good thing. Sure they say that for the most part the pill, which women have been taking for eons, is relatively safe, as long as you DON'T Smoke. Anybody who smokes, or has in the past knows how hard it is to quit, so one day a young lady decides to start the pill, but she can't quit smoking, now she runs a high risk of having a stroke, and either dies or maybe ends up being paralyzed because she was trying to be responsible while were in the midst of a population explosion. That might be an over the top situation, but it does show my point why it would be good if a man could be equally responsible for having a roll in the hay, (man that sounds itchy.)

To listen to some guys, you'd think a condom would kill them. So I think the pill is necessary because it provides them with an alternative. But if they turn down both, they should be made go without...

Sounds like a bit more equality this way. Just hope side effects are low. That's been the problem with the pill for women - some dangerous potential side effects, especially in its early days.

personaly, i think that it is only fair that the male has the equal ability to prevent pregnancy as the woman, however, if the male decided that he no longer wanted to take the pill because he "couldnt be bothered" or forgot then i towuld eb the woman who would then be left in a difficult situation. yes the male pill may be a good idea but i do believe that each person should be responsible for themselves and not leave it up to the other party.

If side effects are modest, a male pill will be the single most important equalizer in the gender war. Men will be able to remain on the pill until THEY are ready to be fathers. Is the partner's behaviour consistent with a strong commitment to a desired family? Is her behaviour respectful and loving? If not, then no way. No more lying reassurances from women that they are on birth control when they are not. No more will women have the exclusive power to decide on pregnancy, forcing men into economic slavery with 19 years of so-called 'child support'.

Unfortunately, it's likely that government will try to sabotage any male birth control pill. Government likes the control over men that so-called 'child support liability' allows. This is so important to government that it throws those who don't pay into debtors' prison, a practice that was otherwise discontinued on ethical grounds early last century. If government had wanted a male pill then it would have been developed many years ago.

if you are for this pill so that men can choose when they become fathers and so that they dont have to worry about their partners lying to them about birth control surely the obvious problem there would be an untrusting relationship which surely can't be healthy? personaly i think that if men wish to take the pill that's fine as there is an equivalent option for females and it is only fair, but please dont generalise that all women would lie about birth control just to have a baby with an unwilling partner.

Um, I made no generalization that all women would lie about birth control. I simply said that the male pill will prevent those women who do lie from getting pregnant and economically enslaving the man. Also, I agree that an untrusting relationship isn't a healthy basis for starting a family. I made the point that the male pill will enable men to ensure that pregnancy doesn't happen until there is good evidence that a relationship is trustworthy.

They could have gotten reversilby sterilized at least 40 years ago. They used to use gold to make valves. That procedure is much easier for men than for women. I still don't know why this is such a well-kept secret.

Trouble is, that it would take about 15 to 20 ejaculations to 'clean the pipes' so it would need some planning ahead to avoid 'fetal mistakes'. Think the onus ought to be with women since they 'bear' the consequences directly.
Heard of silicone being placed in Fallopian tubes that could be pulled out later.
Another tactic would be to have the dude put some semen in cryonics & get a vasectomy, they can use a turkey baster later, later, if desired.

Those are all completely viable options. Yes, there is the "semen pipeline" problem, but using 15-20 condoms will still be much easier than a pregnancy and/or a child.

Women have been getting reversible sterilization for quite a while, and women who are about to undergo chemo very often have their eggs frozen for later use. Keep in mind, tho', that any reproductive surgery for men is much easier, as men have everything on the outside and women have everything on the inside.

Frankly, I don't see most men taking responsibility until they're the ones left with the consequences. What do you think?

Common male tactic is Phunk & Flee. I support DNA registering to find paternity, doesn't matter if lady slept with the varsity, whoever's sperm connects is culpable.

There are much more sophisticated tests now. Even if a woman did sleep with a whole frat, the actual father could be determined.....tho' samples would be needed from everyone.

I had a friend in school who was impregnated by a frat rat. His whole brotherhood swore under oth they'd had sex with her. It nearly destroyed her, poor kid. Her "boyfriend," naturally, was determined to be the bio-dad.

Men don't get pregnant. I would never trust a man to be responsible for birth control. It might be OK as a back up, but if I didn't want a baby, I'd still use my own birth control.

A lot of people try to live by "the way things ought to be" instead of "the way things are." I ought to be able to walk down the dark street alone at night wearing my best bling and little else, but it's not something an intelligent person would do.

beware of Vatican Roulette (rhythm method) or the 'thrills & spills' (coitus interuptis)
    method both are quite tricky.
Use condoms & sponges for a 'belt & suspenders' approach & have both parties 'work at it'. Good for A-holes who deliberately poke condoms with a pin too (there's some out there).

There wasn't a third option. All the pills developped for men in the past have reduced libido, although some brands of female BC pills also do that for some women. So wait and see.

The converse is the release of Viagra/Cialis/Levitra have allowed once impotent hubbies with bedswerving intent to resume their infideities. Maybe the Pharma companies could develop a 'hybrid' pill to (covertly) counter ilegitimacy.
