A study published Friday from the journal Cell describes an experimental drug that is effectively a birth control pill... for men. Well, male mice, for now. When this drug was tested daily on male mice, it "reduced their sperm count so much that the animals were rendered effectively infertile. When the drug was stopped, sperm counts and quality were restored and the mice were able to sire healthy offspring."

In a commentary that accompanies the study, Dr. William Bremner of the University of Washington in Seattle shares their optimism. He called the drug "an exciting new approach to male contraception." Do you think birth control pills for men is genius -- or unnecessary?

LATIMES.COM reports:

Long past the time where EACH party ..
    contributing biological content ..
is RESPONSIBLE for any results (or prevention of pregnancy) ..
What would be even better ..
is if there was more emphasis on the RESPONSIBILITY of being actual ADULTS ..
    and not rutting animals ..
(even the livestock doesn't breed indiscriminately .. )

I only knew one man who had a baby and that was back in the days before phone systems were automated. He was dating a telephone operator and she reversed the charges.

I guess illegal aliens will be paying for our social security benefits in the future. What's with the hatred towards babies, marriage, responsibility and nature these days.

No hatred towards babies. I bet not every married woman wants to get pregnant when making love with her husband. Birth control is being responsible.

They won't use it anymore than women use theirs. Why should they when abortions can be had on every street corner?

Because they can't moron, in Mississippi there is only one place to get legal abortions and they have to fly a Dr in from out of state, hardly any corner moron.

One place in the entire state of Mississippi? Good for them. About damn time. Now all you lazy, irresponsible idiots will either start using birth control or actually have to take responsibility for yourselves.

Actually, what I was implying is that we, Americans, are on enough pills as it is. Every time you turn around there is a new drug being advertised with a side effect list the length of a novel. So what I really meant was that, no thank you, but we (as in men and women) don't need any more pills from the ever-so-trustworthy pharmaceutical industry. Was never a fan of female birth control pills either. Get it?

You seem biased on whether we need more or not...perhaps I'm wrong. But given that the current pills are relatively safe (always exceptions, of course) and the new pill would also be relatively safe (exceptions always), I answer the question as genius rather than unnecessary...actually may even argue more than necessary considering the societal acceptance that 'boys will be boys' and promiscuity is encouraged among young men while it is discouraged on a whole for women taken to charges of being "paid for having sex" as charged by the popular radio show host when it comes to basic health care coverage.

Unfortunately, the people who are pumping out children like Detroit used to pump out cars, won't bother to use them because government hand-outs are too lucrative. It's just too bad they couldn't come up with a 'morality' pill.

Let me see... female birth control has horrible side effects ranging from pregnancy (oops) to
Having a constant feeling of nausea

    Morning sickness

    Irregular menstrual cycles

    Loose bowel and bloating

    Mood swings

    Palpitation

    Depression (in rare cases)

Irregular vaginal discharges and increased susceptibility to infections as the changes in hormonal levels affect the endometrial tissue in a deleterious manner.

    Tenderness of breasts

    Loss of libido

Hypertension and changes in the lipid profiles

Increased fluid retention attributing on some level towards weight gain

Decreased calcium retention in kidneys leading to bone loss and osteoporosis

Hair and follicular changes are also seen.

    Yeah. I want that.

Wake up one morning to find it crawling away? I dunno but testing in mice almost never results in good effects on humans. They need clinical testing, it needs to be reversible, and not damage DNA.
