Scientific Study Explains Why Women Date A-holes!

Steverno~POTL~PWCM~JLA 2012/05/16 01:49:03

It's well known that women find sexy, rebellious rogues attractive. Duh. But until now it's not really been clear why women choose to turn that attraction into long-term relationships, when they know they stand a high chance of getting burned. New research, however, reveals that the secret lies in the hormones.

Sure, a woman might choose to mate with an attractive male because evolutionarily it means attractive kids. But that doesn't entirely explain things, as there's more to life than good-looking offspring. Now, research conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio and published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggests that during ovulation hormones affect judgment of parenting potential. Kristina Durante, one of the researchers, explains to Live Science:

"Under the hormonal influence of ovulation, women delude themselves into thinking that the sexy bad boys will become devoted partners and better dads. When looking at the sexy cad through ovulation goggles, Mr. Wrong looked exactly like Mr. Right."

Essentially, during ovulation women are more likely to believe that rogues would make better potential fathers—so they specifically pick sexier men over obviously more dependable men—even if they're jerks.

To establish that, female participants were asked to view online dating profiles of either sexy or reliable men during periods of both high and low fertility. When asked to predict likely paternal contribution from the prospective partners close to ovulation, the women thought the sexy men would contribute most. In other words, that long-term, they'd make better dads.

The researchers backed that up with a second study, where actors played the role of sexy cad or reliable dad, and the result turned out just the same. So, if a woman starts dating an asshole, she will—at least once a month—be under the impression that he'll make a good long-term mate. One interesting aside is the fact that the effects only seem to apply to the individual. Durante explains:

"When asked about what kind of father the sexy bad boy would make if he were to have children with another woman, women were quick to point out the bad boy's shortcomings. But when it came to their own child, ovulating women believed that the charismatic and adventurous cad would be a great father to their kids."

The take-home message from the research? Timing, my friend. Timing is everything. [Journal of Personality and Social Psychology via Live Science]

Pfffbt. I think this explains some of the aholes in the world, but not nearly all of them.

The phenomenon that simply drives me insane are the dumb bimbos that flock to the prison to find one to 'save'. Check out this screen shot from our County Website. Now, I'm sure some of the hits are relatives checking on the inmates and such, but you know a good number of them are doting, idiot women. ??!! WT???

Between Items 1, 3 and 7, that's over 34,000 hits in relation to inmates in custody. Over twice the number of the next highest utilized link - property tax searches. And we wonder what has happened to our society?

They're watching Jerry Springer and Cops looking for their next dating prospect, I tell you.

We all have the potential for major ass-holery in us, I think.

It's merely a matter of how much we choose to indulge in it...

    "Ovulation goggles", eh?

Because every single time ANY woman decides to have sex, she's consciously seeking out a potential sperm donor.

And ALL women are attracted to the same exact male archetypes.

    Right.

    Cool story bro.

I'm not big on studies that claim that ALL of a certain demographic or group are inclined to act in a certain way.But this study may highlight why a lot of woman are attracted to the "bad boy" types.

Sort of like a sighting I saw a couple of weeks ago.I saw this young petty 20 something blond. She was riding on back of a ratty-looking Harley chopper. With a ugly bearded 40 year old guy wearing a biker gang "colors" leather vest.Talk about being attracted to a "bad boy" type...lol

People like what they like, for better or worse, regardless to gender, IMO.

Trying to figure out the exact reason why is like asking 'why water is wet.'

    And studies like that usually end up just serving as a weak justification for peoples' bad choices;

"It's not MY fault, it was my hormones!"

Interesting. Can't argue with the theory cause, God knows, we've see enough evidence to back it up pretty stongly.

I don't think it applies to all women, but I guess the theory doesn't explain why many women don't go for the bad boys.

No, indeed; it doesn't take into account all the women who like 'sensitive, artistic' guys, or 'nerdy intellectual' guys, or the ones who like 'quirky and funny jokers.'

It assumes that ALL women want someone like Gerard Butler or Collin Farrel.

And while both are attractive, that archetype is not necessarily every woman's cup of tea.

Hmmm, define "treats you badly." If I were to take you literally, you have never made a mistake in a relationship, and to apply your logic, if you DID screw up, you should be cut loose. Is that how you truely see things?

Anything that is below basic gentlemanly, expected behavior defines 'treats you badly' I admittedly made a grandiose mistake Believe no one has mercilessly scrutinized themselves more than I because of it..Although I maintain being honest in my feelings, steadfast and forthright without waver always it far from secures the same in return

"I admittedly made a grandiose mistake..." Now, I dont know what that means but if we were to make a logical inference, it would fall below expected "womanly" behavior. And you claim "no one has mercilessly scrutinized themselves more than I..." If I were to believe you (which I do) why would I "cut you loose?" Even if the relationship had to be redefined, (ie romantic to platonic) I dont believe in cutting people loose. I dont allow myself to be manipulated or abused, but neither do I place anymore than 50% of the responsibility on the other person in a relationship. That being the case, I cant in good conscience throw someone under the bus unless I am ready to absorb some tire marks myself. Everyone deserves a second chance.
