School Suspends Cheerleaders for Hot Dog Hazing: Fair or Foul?

Were you ever tormented by a cheerleader in high school? This one is for you.

Pom-pom shakers at Jackson High School in Everett, Wash., were suspended for making new squad members wear diapers, shooting them with squirt guns and hitting them with hot dogs, KOMO News reported.

The girls were suspended for violating the district's athletic code of conduct, which prohibits hazing.

"When students make poor choices, it is disappointing to us, just as it is disappointing to parents. We hope, as parents do, that each action with appropriate consequences is a positive learning experience," school officials said in a statement.

Some of the cheerleaders' parents met with school officials on Thursday, but the suspensions were not overturned, KOMO reports.

But some students defended the girls' behavior, saying the ritual was a "yearly thing."

"No one's died from getting hit in the face with a sausage," one told KOMO.

Do you think school officials went too far? Or were the suspensions well deserved?

Hazing is hazing, and if it's against the rules at a school, suspension is fair.

If you would suspend any other kid for doing it why wouldn't you suspend a cheerleader?

If their school has a no hazing rule, then they should abide by it, especially if they are part of the cheer leading squad.

The cheerleaders threw hot dogs at the other CHEERLEADERS. They had chosen new members, who could have refused to get hit with the dogs, wearing the diapers and whatever, was it squirt guns?! Oh no, not a squirt gun! ... Seriously, if the girls didn't want to participate, why didn't one of their parents call the school and say that their child would appreciate not being a participant in the hazing thing. To suspend the kids for playing with each other like this just isn't right. These are cheerleaders, outgoing, big-mouthed. No reason to believe they would not have the ability to complain about the hyjinks, if they didn't like it. Sounds like it was someone watching the incident, not the actual victims, who complained and got them all suspended. It would seem to me, that if they were just jealous of the cheerleaders - they should have gone home and asked someone to hit them with hot dogs and squirt guns, so they could feel like they belong too -- rather than start this nonsense of suspending high school kids, for the stuff they did to each other, apparently with the permission of the kids getting hit. stupid school.

There is so much bullying and harassment going on in schools these days that the schools should not allow any kind of tearing down of self esteem whatsoever, kids are taking their own lives due to being bullied and this could be construed that way by someone.

Does it take someone dying to make hazing unacceptable ?!? Even in it`s minor form if it violated the school`s code of conduct, then the suspensions were fair and the school officials were within their rights. My question is how did the choice of "hotdogs" tie in with the supposedly initiation ritual carried out by the cheerleaders, seems a rather dim-witted choice.

It seems as though you guys are only noticing the hot dog part. Did you read about how they made them wear diapers and such? To me, it sounds like they're taking away the girls' pride and self esteem, to show them who's boss. That is what's unacceptable.

Violence? No violence? Throwing anything at a person is violent. And clearly someone did get hurt. If nobody was feeling the pain, nobody would have reported the behaviour and the cheerleaders would never have been suspended.

What may seem harmless to most, may not be harmless to all. Teenage girls can be especially vulnerable to ridicule and a situation like this could push that one vulnerable girl over the edge. I think the school was 100% correct in their actions. Why not promote self esteem rather than tear it down?

and it was a lucky thing that nobody got hurt. These girls deserved to be suspended. Why do people get enjoyment out of tormenting and embarrassing others? It all starts with small, stupid actions and then gets more intense and dangerous. If they had gotten away with this, who knows what they would have done next.

High school girls are not kids anymore. Another reason why high school girls shouldn't get pregnant. "kids" bringing up kids.
