Sally Ride was lesbian. Does this tarnish her status as an American hero?

Sally Ride accomplished what a lot of Americans wish they could have. It is senseless to attempt to sully her reputation or detract from her accomplishments by bringing in her private lifestyle choices. I don't hear anything being harked about her fellow astronauts' sexual adventures. In fact, sexual preferences of any celebrity ought to be taboo, far as I'm concerned.

If you were on the battlefield and wounded and a fellow soldier rushed in under fire and picked you up to carry you to safety, are you going to say, "Hey, are you gay? Because if you're gay, put me down and go get me somebody else"? I don't think so.

Omg, who the hell cares? So she likes women, so what? This is like asking, does Micheal Angelo being gay diminish the Sistine Chapel masterpiece?
Many of my personal heroes happen to be gay. I don't look to Oscar Wilde and say, "Wow, what a great gay guy", I say, "What a great writer."

You know its also odd that since I have posted this almost NONE of the the usually vociferous self-identified conservatives on SH have answered this question. I know they saw it because many of them live here. Go figure?

I have a friend who ran into this. Her partner had children from a previous marriage and when she died - even though her kids didn't take care of her while she was dying - they also refused to acknowledge that their Mom has someone special.

What exactly does that have to do with what she accomplished? Your private life is private for a reason.

Youve piqued my curiosity why are her last wishes so intriquing to you,do I smell a hidden agenda here,I remember folks being "outed" against their wishes alive or dead which is equally wrong as any homophobe.

Maybe to acknowledge the life she had with her partner - nothing more or nothing less. It was a time when you really wouldn't have shared the information if you wanted to move up the ladder - and she did have aspirations.

I am reluctant to speculate on her reason, but perhaps someone, somewhere will be a little less reluctant to be themselves because of it. that's it.

What she did in her private life has no bearing on what she accomplished in her professional life. There are many others that keep these things secret and there are many accomplished writers who have wrote great books and we still read them. In fact there are many kind of work that have been done by homosexuals that the general public admires. Jim Nabors, for example and other actors who are admired for their great acting.

What ever she was, she was a hero, first woman astronaut. She seemed dignified and private with her affairs which is admirable. Seems rather rude to drag out her sexual orientation when she herself didn't put it out there.
