Sacrificial Virgins!

I am a pagan, I worship the gods of my ancestral people, I wear a Thor's hammer, and do various other heathen activities. Today while on the bus a well meaning beligerant Christian informed me that my Gods are evil because they demand virgin sacrifices, and that by wearing my hammer I am a supporter of virgin sacrifice. He became quite flustered when I laughed and said that my Gods would find that to be a horrid waste of a virgin.

My question is, where did the virgin sacrifice thing come from? I couldn't find anything to support it being a pagan thing, was it made up by the church? Or did someone's imagination run away with them?

I have no clue but blame it on us Christians, we get blamed for everything & when people come across one or some that don't have the decency to keep to themselves we all get tagged as trying to shove our beliefs down others throats.

I think it may have been promoted by the Christian church (early church) to discourage those who might be tempted to join the pagans. Of course, since they converted many people who were pagans to begin with, they would've known the truth, anyway. I think either misunderstanding of what aboriginals in various countries were doing or rumors about cannibalism and virgin sacrifice eventually became urban legends about pagans, whether or not any of these things had their basis in truth. While there may, at one time, have been cultures that sacrificed humans, it was so long ago in history that any religion that might have ever done it would have long since abandoned that practice. I was raised in the Roman Catholic faith and we were never taught that about pagans (we were never taught much of anything about them, come to think of it -- beyond pagan babies).Of course, some of the things I've heard ignorant people state as "absolute fact" about the Catholic Church is almost as laughable as sacrificial virgins (and burning witches at the stake for heresy comes pretty close to virgin sacrifice, in my book.)

It was made up by the church. They were desperately trying to force everyone to change from paganism to christianity, but majority of the people refused. They had to devise ways to trick them (sounds familiar, guess that little thing didn't go away over the centuries) so they lied. Anyone who stood up and said "wait, that's not true" was labeled as a witch, or enemy, or simply just burned for the hell of it. (they were saving the "tortured" soul, so it was approved by the divine supposedly) and eventually people started accepting it as word. Luckily, the truth is slowly coming out.

Christians are some of the most ignorant and bigoted people in the world, they come p with all sorts of things to make other religions look bad. I would like to inform this person how much of the pagan religion he probably celebrates and doesn't even know it.

I think that person is very ignorant of the Asatru religion.

Sacrifice was a part of the Greek religious mythology and was probably a part of their prehistoric past. The story of the Trojan war deals with the sacrifice of the virgins Iphigenia & Polyxena. The Locrians sent many girls to their deaths to make up for the rape of Cassandra. It is obvious that Andromeda was intended to be sacrificed, but Perseus saved her.

Some people obviously lump all non-Christian religions into one.

Thank you for the compliment. My ex-husband followed the Asatru religion. I had 15 years of exposure to it.

You should have recited the Nine Noble Virtues to them. ;)

...nobody knows for sure when the idea of human sacrifice began. Virginity, especially in ancient times, was considered a form of ultimate purity. Thus virgins were desirable sacrifices to gods in the belief those sacrificing would be richly rewarded.

the Mayans and other ancient civilizations are known for sacrificing virgins, since the christian in their wisdom of following Christ (ha ha ha) love they neighbor and those with out sin cast the first stone, tagged all religions that do not believe in the Hebrew god and the Christ child as heathen, evil, Satan worshipers that kill indiscriminately and sacrifice virgins to their lustful Gods, however they Conveniently forget how the crusades and other church supported wars often rapped murdered and destroyed whole villages and country's in the name of their god who is so wise and peaceful and loving. (hope you caught the Sarcasm )

Mostly animal sacrifices. As was the case with the earlier jewish/hebrews. They had an exceptionally complicated formula for sacrificing which animal and how and where its various parts had to be placed. They had burnt offerings, sin offerings, wave offerings the lot. Vikings definitely did animal sacrifices and occaisional human sacrifices to Odin, but there is no evidence that they had to be virgins. Not saying that they didnt, I just havent come across the evidence. I think that Christian is just being ill-mannered and should have kept himself to himself.

Idk if your interested about the subject but from what I've researched so far the vikings (and those before them) did do a little human sacrifice but it was, as far as I can tell, mostly restricted to funerals of chiefs or other honored warriors/leaders and they were most often volunteers usually the dead mans wife or someone of that nature. Not a hundred percent sure but that's all I've ever found and I'm an asatruar (Norse pagan) so I do a lot of research on it.
