Rise of the Supermarket Wedding Cake: Would You?

You!
Add Photos & Videos
Weddings ring more than wedding bells -- weddings ring up high priced cakes, right? Not for long! The recession has forced some brides and grooms to look into less expensive alternatives. Supermarkets now offer wedding cakes that cost between $200 - $400 USD. Custom cakes can cost over $1,000. The supermarkets still offer some customization including monograms and personalized decorations.

Watch the Wall Street Journal Video report:Grocers have started to muscle their way into the fancy-fondant realm to woo customers who want custom wedding cakes, but not at a custom price. Alyssa Abkowitz has details on Lunch Break. Photo: Roger M. Richards for The Wall Street Journal.

Sure i would buy a market wedding cake! and to also cut cost.....Some people get married at the Justice of peace, and have a nice little ceremony with suits, dresses, cakes, and 20 to 50 people......music, fun, pictures,(video in the courtroom!) ring exchange, and still money to take a quick trip! why the heck not? Makes it nice and convenient, and you can even get the judge at the courthouse to sign the declaratory judgement on the pre-nup while you are there!!! (and after the ceremony, you can even do a post nup to add to the drama and might even have time to file it for public record before you go on your honeymoon!!! 2012. Justice of peace just married on motorcycle

I got mine from Hy-Vee seven years ago. Our marriage is still going strong, so I don't think anyone was harmed by the eating of this supermarket wedding cake.

From the mix aisle to the bakery to the customer. Might be OK in Japan. Maybe the next thing will be a vending machine wedding cake.

My daughter's cake is from a baker that all they do are wedding cakes. The price we were quoted by them was two hundred dollars LESS than the grocery story. Plus they deliver. I can't think of anything more nightmarish than having to pick up a wedding cake the day of the wedding.

Only due to one ingredient that is used in most cakes: Sodium Aluminum Phosphate/Sulfate. It is NOT allowed anywhere NEAR me!!

I'd even make my own! Weddings have gotten so out of hand financially. At the end of the day you're married and the money is all gone. I'd rather have a house or a car with what people are spending on weddings these days.

I think seeing the movie Father of the Bride when Steve Martin yells it is only flour and eggs and a few other things. I saw his point. My daughter's wedding cake was around $900.and that was 14 years ago It was fantastic with fountains and lights and three different flavors but hey when all was said and done it was just a cake.

true ... judging from what see on TV (ick), today's weddings (can) cost a small fortune and everybody becomes so stressed out and irritable that the joy of the moment can become overshadowed by the other stuff ... n some cases, people who start out as friends find out that they aren't such nice people underneath

Sure...it's where I usually get my kiddos birthday cakes, but I have to admit, my wedding cake was made by a professional baker~grandma! She's made just about every wedding cake in my family.
