6 years ago, I moved from Northern Ohio to a mostly rural area of Middle Tennessee. When the unemployment and welfare checks stop coming, former industrial areas will become high crime zones. Already overtaxed, politicians will insist that they need to further raise taxes in order to combat crime and repair their crumbling infrastructure. I enjoy my backyard view a lot more here also.

Right now I'm thinking of moving up one state to New Hampshire. But I'm also considering Vermont and Maine. I like the change of seasons, the snow, the wide open spaces. All of these are glorious states to live in. I want to be surrounded by nature, not sky scrapers and mini malls. I want to see wildlife in my backyard and have plenty of room to walk through some woods, see waterfalls, maybe even climb a small mountain. Maybe I'm over estimating what we'll be capable of doing but I do want to be in a natural surrounding. I still have a couple of years to decide. You never know, we could change our minds, things could happen....we'll see.

I voted "Retire Far Away" to be able to comment! The fact is that I have no plans to ever completely retire as long as I have my health. With the economy the way it is now, many will not be able to retire even if they want to.

If we don't stay in the house we are in we will not move out of Texas I feel sure. This is where we have lived all our life and where our two grown sons live. We live in the country and like it.

I won't get my choice because my husband doesn't want to live there... I don't care about the weather. I would hate to retire someplace hot like Florida. My dream would be to retire in Ireland.

"Retire Nearby" as in Right Here; cannot afford to go too far away from Roots! Grandchildren are here and all of those other places have one-two ideals of retirement...You have to work within your 'means' and if not, failure strikes and with a fixed income strike you down for the count! Planning your retirement was achieved in the past, the 'swing' of this type of economy requires more eyes on everything and 'cash' in your pocket instead of a piece of plastic!

I retired as far away from LA that I could afford. I would rather live in Flagstaff, than LA any day of the year, snow or not. A little snow never hurt anybody, and you sure as hell can breath clean air there. Phoenix is to hot, too crowed and the Illegal Alien Capital of the US when it comes to kidnapping. But at least they have Sheriff Joe.

I'm fortunate to be semi-retired and live semi-nearby. The trick is to find your comfort zone and then have enough resources to travel. I have many friends who have confided to me that they will never retire because of their economic situation. It saddens me to know that they will probably work until the day they die. I always help them out whenever I can.

It needs a 3d option. Who Can Retire?

The economy is fast making retirement a thing of the past. Well the economy and the looting of Social Security and Medicare since 1968 are making retirement a dream instead of a reality.

I am already retired from the work force, but I am not moving anywhere. I will try to enjoy my life as much as possible while I'm still alive on this planet. I am content. There are some places that I would like to go (only) to visit, but not to live there.

I want to retire to out in the middle of nowhere where the closest town only has at the most 100 residents. I dont much care where as long as its in the states, is mountainous and has forests and rivers.

Being realistic, retire near by and visit the far away places. The American dream is to pay off your house and still be young enough to enjoy the extra money in retirement. Going to the far away places are great to visit but they suck if you uproot and plan to live there (unless your a politician of some type and have millions of dollars laying around).

Most people do not realize they have a lifestyle and plan on keeping it durning retirement. Modifications are based on living conditions that you know. Moving to the far away place is unknown. Even with research thee is a whole lot of the unknown.

Stay where you are, plan trips and enjoy what you've earned.
