Renting a Patch of Grass: Rad or Sad?

Those of you who have never lived in a big city might have a hard time imagining why anyone would decide to rent this narrow lot of grass. Grass is grass, right? You can get it anywhere.

Not in Manhattan, though. The Big Apple is the most densely populated area in the country and one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with more than 1.5 million people inhabiting a minuscule 23 square miles.

populated areas world 1 5 people inhabiting anbspminusculenbsp23 square

In that context, Timeshare Backyard makes a little more sense. But only a little.

The 3200-square-foot lot at 145 Ludlow St. may not seem like much, but hidden away in crowded corridors of the Lower East Side, it's a virtual paradise. Especially at just $50 per hour.

The Timeshare Backyard, owned by the Participation Agency, told The Gothamist, "Guests are invited to furnish their private suburban backyard by selecting from the folder of supplementary add-ons. Things like a play pool, Slip 'n' Slide, packed cooler, hammock, a BBQ with meat selection, keg, a garden hose, sparklers, beer cozies, trampoline, hula hoops, water balloons, lanterns or popsicles and more."

Of course, everything comes with a price. You'll have to fork out $150 if you want to make use of their enormous grill, $200 for the "play pool" (read: kiddie pool), and $100 for the Slip 'n' Slide.

Oh, and if you want them to provide a live band, it'll cost you another $5,000. Ouch!

Since your average Slip 'n' Slide will run you a grand total of, like, $15, we're not sure how they could possibly get anyone to rent theirs out for $100. Maybe it has a loop or something. (It had better have a loop or something.)

I've seen grass in Manhattan before.

Let me think if I can remember where it was....

Oh yeah, this little place they call Central Park.

Sad that city people have to resort to this in order to experience nature. I was born and raised in the country, and I'd probably die if I had to live in a green-less, overcrowded, noisy concrete jungle As for the park, sure. They could go to the park, but it wouldn't exactly be private. At least with the rent-a-lawn people can have some privacy, keep a closer eye on the kids, and even get access to a pool or something, if they wanted. Probably a lot safer than Central Park, too. I hear there's a lot of mugging and rapes that happen there...e_o

I know that backyards in New York are pretty scarce but come on. This is just ridiculous. If you really want a backyard that badly then move out of New York.

It's sad because i'm a native New Yorker, and i know there are small neighborhood parks where u can
enjoy your kids b-day party or go under the sprinkler, no need to pay for anything.

and sad, Don't people get how much we really NEED nature, greenery and space for our spiritual, mental and physical health?

I love the rooftop garden idea too!

    ps. What a friggin GOUGE!
(Maybe it has a loop or something. (It had better have a loop or something.) - I think it has a built in 'screw'.

My little piece of desert is generally plus 100 daily - but I wouldn't trade it for Manhattan.

If you really want or need a piece of grass for whatever reason, then it's "rad" that there is at least a spot available. If you don't want or need it, cool. But if you do......

Though it looks like a good business, imagine all those that don't have the privilege of having a backyard, say those who live in the 5th floor of a building just between other buildings. some may say go to a park, (central), yes, it might be a choice. how far? the danger? I clicked sad because where I live there is green everywhere, can't imagine my life without my big backyard with all my trees full of fruits and birds, my garden, my grass, my kids and their dogs running all over it. It would be devastating for my soul.

If they can make enough to pay the taxes at least it will be kept clean. You and some friends could go there and just lounge and read books.

I understand the fact that to New Yorkers the grass would seem like a God-send and I don't blame them for wanting to escape the tight hallway-like walls they live in. However since i live in the Country-side every part of me screams "Why would someone spend so much money for sooooo little?!?!?!?" then again we live on 7 and a half acres and this is a small lot here. I love the city life however i don't know if i could give up living on a little patch-o-heaven like the open country.
