Dropped out of the University of Montana because he thought the professors were unqualified to teach him anything. He grew up in poverty and says he was beaten by his stepfather from when he was almost six to when he was about fourteen. By then Langan had begun weight training, and forcibly ended the abuse, throwing his stepfather out of the house and telling him never to return.

Ah .. interesting how the first thing (in sad, sad ways) is that one is /labelled/ ..
(and yes, oh, my .. yes, .. have had to deal with some folks who have /labelled/ me as well in this life so far) ..
This is someone who had a rough start in life .. but then again .. even though he may not have the /social polish/ (like those of the 'silver spoon' set) ..
He's got .. a strong WORK Ethic ..
A STRONG Mind .. Strong Will indeed ..
Self-Reliant .. Self-Confident ..
Stands up for what he believes ..
And now .. We can all Agree to ADMIRE someone who has worked so hard overall ..
and speaks his mind .. with clarity ..

He was proflled in "Outliers', a great book by Malcolm Gladwell. He is so intelligent he's been labeled the "Smartest Man in America", but his social skills are so horrible that he's had difficulty accomplishing much with his high intelligence.

I saw this as more of a case of extremely bad parenting and poverty combining to keep a brilliant talent from achieving his potential. He is an "outlier".

I have met several genius's in my lifetime who hated being treated like lab rats and preferred to take menial jobs where they would be treated like regular a regular Joe. I think that common working folks are not interested in pretending to be "special" and tend to treat each other in a comradely manner. They have a tendency to provide a sort of pshycological support group among themselves that Chris may have found comforting.
